Debate: Is Fracking a Safe Method for Acquiring Energy Resources? Fracking is a process for obtaining natural gas and oil through high-pressure blasting of underground rock. Fracking involves pumping a specially blended liquid - a mix of water, sand, and chemicals - into wells drilled deep below Earth’s surface. The fluids pour in with such force that the rock formations fracture, or crack, releasing precious oils and natural gas. Oils and gas are key resources for heating our homes, creating electricity, and fueling our cars. But critics of fracking worry that the process is harming the environment and people’s health. Is fracking a safe way to meet our energy needs? Prepare for the in-class debate by completing the graphic organizer below.
