3-2 Project Draft: Introduction and Proposal 1. Using the resources from this course, identify the key characteristics of each of the four lenses: social science, natural science, history, and humanities. Social Science- Social science is the research of behaviors of human societies. There is a wide variety of academic fields that fall under the social sciences, including sociology, geography, psychology, and economics, just to name a few. The process of research and collection is similar to that of the natural sciences and is done by using the scientific method. Natural Science- Natural science is the study of the physical world. Subcategories that fall underneath the natural science field consists of physics, biology, and chemistry. Scientists in this field utilize the scientific method as a guide for research. History- The history lens allows for researchers to delve into the past. Using accurate information from past events, documents, and journals allows for present problems to be solved. Humanities- The humanities focus of study is that of ethics, languages, and arts of different cultures universally. The humanities allow society to identify similarities and differences of differing cultures from around the world. 2. Identify the types of evidence used when looking through each lens. Social Science- Evidence used by the social sciences is that of straightforward knowledge and inspection, joined with the scientific method to convey authentic research. Natural Science- The natural science lens is based on factual evidence from consideration and testing. Instruments such as dissertation and scholarly articles may be used as evidence as long as the information is credible, respectable, and admissible. History- There are two main types of historical evidence: primary sources and secondary sources. A primary source would be a first-hand narrative of a development or subject. A secondary source would be works such as literature and article reviews, research reports, or reference books. Humanities- Evidence used by the humanities lens would contain documents such as historical newspapers, diaries/journals/letters, case law, and works of art/literature/music. Sources in the humanities are primarily from the duration under study. 3. Determine similarities and differences among the lenses, based on the characteristics you have identified. Social science is the study of human demeanor in contrasting setÝngs, while natural science is the study of the natural and physical world. Both the social sciences and natural sciences lenses use the scientific method as a means for research and collection of data. Social science in relation to the humanities is that both lenses are involved in the interest of human behaviors. Where they differ is in the way that they conduct research. The social sciences use a more scientific approach, while the humanities apply systematic techniques to illustrate theories. 4. Last, in preparation for your project, select a topic to work on from among the following three topics. Document what you know about the topic you select and what you want to know more about. (Voting rights, climate change, justice). The topic I am choosing to focus on is justice. From what I already know and see in the media is that justice does not always happen in the manner that we want, if at all. I do know that there is a protocol among the justice system, whether we agree with it or not, there is a process that law enforcement ofÏcials must follow. In instances such as murder, I do not believe there is any type of justice. Yes, the person may be caught and incarcerated for the rest of their life, but that does not bring the deceased back, and now two families are ruined by the tragedy. Something I would like to know more about on this topic as I do enjoy watching true crime shows, documentaries, etc., why does it seem that in some cases (victim being abused, stalked, child abuse), that they cannot get the help they need it seems like until it is too late? How do we as a society come together and make sure these cases do not fall through the cracks?
