Discussion Week 4
The Walt Disney World fandom is a fandom that I am not a member of and probably will never be. I
grew up in the seventies, with four other siblings and my parents. My family could not afford to take time off
from school/work to go Disney World, and in reality, I honestly don’t think my sisters and I missed out, as we
did more together as a family that didn’t put my parents into debt.
The concept of "the happiest place on earth" draws people from all over, so I wouldn't say that the
theme is exactly "underlying" because many people proclaim it. It brings back a sense of wonder that a child
might have but may have lost in the adult world of responsibilities and tightly scheduled days. I have seen
enough AMA Reddit strings to realize that in the background things may not necessarily be very blissful,
however out in the groups, seeing the entirety of the sights, hearing the kids, and grown-ups giggling, it is
difficult to not be cheerful when you visit.
According to disneythemeparks.fandom.com, Disney World is "the most-visited entertainment resort
in the world." It has all that from characters to start the creative mind of young people to spas to assist the
more established guests with loosening up following a day of tomfoolery. There are many different Disney
World fandoms. Naturally, there are those who have children—both their own and those they borrow to enjoy
Disney without being judged unfairly—and those who do not have children and do not care what others think
about them attending the park. There is a foodie and a movie-specific fandom. Regardless of one's fandom, the
aim of each visit is the same: to spread joy and awe-inspiring childhood memories.
Fans can be perceived by their custom made, matching shirts and their intricate mouse ears, both the
old fashioned ones and the more up to date blinged out head band ones. They join social media groups that
represent the fandom they have chosen, which may or may not require you to respond to very specific
questions in order to demonstrate that you are a genuine fan. One thing is crystal clear with each sub-being a
fan They love Walt Disney World and there is no put on earth that they would prefer to be.
The message, in my opinion, is that you can't be happy if you don't go to Disney World. Ever. I know
that sounds extreme, but if you do any research into Disney fans, you will find that they are scolded for not
giving Disney World the attention it deserves, for not planning to visit the park for every family event and
vacation, or, God forbid, for claiming that they do not actually enjoy the happiest place on earth. Families have
gone into debt when they come, and some haven't even paid for their first trip before going back. This can
cause individuals who to don't have any desire to go feel like they are failures, particularly those with children.
