Cultural Connections: Differences and Similarities Between
Mesopotamia and Egypt
Both the Mesopotamia and Egyptian regions developed their writing
system around the same time. Mesopotamia had the Cuneiform
writing system that was developed by the Sumerians. This system used
a series of drawings and shapes that record goods brought in, trade and
literature. It was done on clay tablets. Egypt’s writing system
Hieroglyphics was similar to Cuneiform in that it used pictures and
symbols, over 700 of them, in fact. This system was used to record
sacred text and to organize the government and state affairs.

Perceptions of their gods was determined by their individual
environments. Mesopotamia seen their god as powerful, destructive
and had no interest or sympathy. Egyptians viewed their gods as kind,
caring and compassionate. (Acrobatiq, 2014)
Priests in both Mesopotamia and Egypt were powerful land owners.
The priests in Egypt were called Pharaohs and in Mesopotamia they
were called kings. They were responsible for maintaining the order of
the civilizations and of the outsiders. They were religious leaders
responsible for carrying out political and social rituals and a military
leader.
