Healthcare versus sick care This assignment required us to reflect on the definition of healthcare in our own words and how holistic healthcare will impact healthcare when socioeconomics factors into the equation. Does your professional definition of healthcare change after watching this video? Why or why not? I come to this journal with different perspectives of healthcare from varying experiences in my life. I was a young mother to now a Soldier in the Army. Rebecca Onies’ TED talk video did not necessarily change my view; however, it confirmed my understanding of healthcare, which has dramatically shifted since joining the Army. Previous to enlisting into the Army, my healthcare view was the perspective of diagnostic versus preventive. It was not till recently; my view shifted while working in the Madigan Army Medical Center as the Noncommissioned Officer in charge of the surgical unit. During wellness check-ups, we ensure the patients have a safe and healthy environment by asking specific questions concerning diet, exercise, and whether or not they felt safe at home. Even though these questions are asked, it does not guarantee the effort is made to ensure corrections in the patient’s lives. The line of effort comes from prevention by the engagement on the provider’s behalf and the patient and family. My view of healthcare completely shifted in 2013 from the diagnostic perspective to the preventive view. The Army in the spring of 2013 implemented the Performance Triad (P3). This program represented the “sleep, activity and nutrition—three key components that influence the physical, cognitive and emotional dominance of Soldiers, their Families, and our Retirees. While each component is independently important, optimal performance is achieved when all three are addressed simultaneously” (U.S. Army, 2013). Healthcare should be a collective effort with a holistic approach. If traditional healthcare were to stray into the realm of socioeconomics as Rebecca Onie’s organization did, what effects on health delivery models would you anticipate? Explain. Significant strides would be made if traditional healthcare were to stray into the realm of socioeconomics. Medication can only provide so much because, without proper nutrition, safe housing, and preventive care, the issues will worsen or return. Increased costs to healthcare systems and the patients are the result. Saving money starts at the primary level with meeting life’s necessities and then addressing any remaining health issues. Numerous poverty-level health consumers cannot afford insurance, which would assist with preventive care visits, but instead, they continue to overburden the emergency room with repeated visits. I entirely agree hospitals cannot raise someone’s salary; however, they can assist with food and proper housing. Yes, the cost would rise for training professionals and implementing resources. On the other hand, Rebecca Onie’s point of utilizing college students was well thought out. Not only are they contributing to the community in which they are going to school, but they are also receiving volunteer hours, which are much needed for their further applications. I believe that moving from traditional healthcare into socioeconomics would result in significant cost reduction and better quality of care for all individuals.
