What unspoken or underlying messages do you think the ads might be sending? ● Olay #Makespaceforwomen-In this advertisement, a woman can be seen sitting and talking while a screen behind her displays three ladies strolling while wearing space suits and helmets. Then, as the women buckle their seatbelts, a small amount of fear can be seen on their features before they appear calm once more. Three women in space are seen again; one of them declares that there is enough room in space for women before an Olay spaceship launches and a woman answers a call. As they watched the three women in space on television, several women wearing Olay suits sprang. The majority of the audience for this campaign is women, and the message is that there is enough place for women in whatever field they want to pursue, using coding as an illustration. It's all about empowering women and achieving gender equality. Olay utilized this advertising to underline that even though it may be a male-dominated sector, there is still enough room (and opportunities) for ladies. This is contrary to what some cultural views have led people to believe. Therefore, they are utilizing this commercial to demonstrate their dedication to helping women who want to pursue careers in coding. ● Stronger Together – A car is seen speeding down the street while people are seen taping papers to a wall. The consequence of those papers on the wall was a pattern in the shape of a rainbow (papers were posted according to their colors). A couple was posing for photos in front of the artistic wall, and I could see them. Everyone is the intended audience for stronger together, and the underlying message is that individuals should be accepted for who they are, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation, and that when our differences are combined, we form a strong force and accomplish more (unity in diversity). ● Canon: Truthmark – A man spoke about how pictures and images are taken out of context and used to project unique ideas, while three photos and pictures with tales were exhibited. Two more guys spoke about how the photographs they shot had been misused and how crucial it is that the photographs that photographers take to be used following the truth. While this advertising appears to be directed at journalists and the media, it also has implications for anyone wanting to know the whole story behind every image they see in reports. Verify the context of every print and photo you view to ensure they aren't being taken out of context, is the message being conveyed here? Truthmark is made to exercise control and prevent plagiarism and requires accurate news and information shared with the public. Fight the Bias – This commercial features men and women discussing the horrible treatment they endured after learning that the virus was thought to have originated in Asia. Each member shares a story about their experiences. Everyone is the intended audience, and the overarching message is ending racism and all forms of racial hatred to secure a harmonious coexistence. It refers to the need to eradicate racism, stigmatization, and segregation. Ad Council exploited the treatment of Asians during the coronavirus outbreak to make a strong message about the need to abolish racial bias (racism), as it is evident that this bias was not caused by the virus coming from an Asian country, but rather by a way to express hidden preferences. 2. What underlying messages do the advertisements send about the group behaviors in them and the audiences they assume will be consuming the products? ● Olay #Makespaceforwomen- Contrary to the initial query of whether there is space for them, it is demonstrated in this advertisement that there is "enough space in space for women." Contrary to what is commonly believed about women, the three women in space suits learned for themselves and made it a point to encourage other women. In this instance, ladies are seen as trying to inspire other women who are the target audience of this advertisement and who will purchase these goods. ● Ad Council: Fight the Virus. Fight the Bias - Regardless of where in Asia they came from or whether the individual being assaulted indeed introduced the illness, Asians were characterized as viral carriers. They were all held accountable for the infection, giving the impression that every Asian was infected. Everyone (the public) is the target audience here, and it is intended that they will learn to treat others fairly and steer clear of prejudice. ● 3M & Post It: Stronger Together – The LGBT community is stereotyped as being isolated, subject to prejudice, and receiving unequal treatment. Fight the Bias. - This article portrays Asians as being held responsible for the coronavirus and subject to discrimination. A Facebook video I saw, for instance, showed dead bodies on the ground with the message, "57 Ukrainians died by Russian strike." I was trying to follow the narration when I noticed that one of the bodies was. The cameraman noticed that the animal was fighting to put its covers back on properly, indicating that the man was still alive. I later learned that this footage was fake and that it took place in Austria, not Ukraine. ● Olay’s #Makespaceforwomen- is about empowering women and encouraging them to enter industries and occupations dominated by males. Question - From a sociological standpoint, how is gender equality promoted in society, and what are the advantages of doing so? Gender equality research will have an impact on society as a whole, not only on women. This is so that society may see the effects of women participating in many roles and spheres of society. For instance, if women and men are paid equally, more women can afford better healthcare, education, and nutrition for their families, raising a generation of healthier children. The sociological perspective is the social science approach I used to formulate my research topic. This viewpoint questions the world people have built and live in by looking into every facet of human activity. Asking about how or why things occur is a common starting point for this viewpoint. To find a solution or an answer to a problem or issue, I must first frame it as a question, after which I must look for resources in the form of literature reviews to support my conclusions. As a woman who uses Olay products, I was immediately drawn to Olay's #Makespaceforwomen advertisement. Although I may have subconsciously attached bias to the advertisement, my preference was balanced because it helped me understand the creator's message: women's empowerment and gender equality. Instead of distorting the meaning of the advertisements, my ideas, assumptions, and values helped me discover the underlying meanings beneath them. Focus on the social science perspectives or approaches you feel would be the most beneficial for analyzing the information you are presented with every day. b. Would examining an ad targeted at caregivers from a sociological perspective help you understand the meaning of family in various cultures? The social sciences have also impacted my personal life because they have taught me how to approach societal problems like illness, poverty, national security, child development, and neighborhood safety. We live in a world with a variety of cultures and practices, and understanding how these cultures and practices operate would help me cherish, respect, and accommodate the culture of others, leading to an understanding of different cultures. Think about challenges or opportunities in your community. How might applying social science perspectives to those issues benefit your community? The use and selling of marijuana are of topics that, in my opinion, still warrant serious consideration. A law to legalize medical marijuana in Alabama was just signed by the governor of that state. Patients must have one of roughly 20 ailments, including anxiety, depression, sleep issues, post-traumatic stress disorder, and intractable pain, according to the law as it is currently written. Raw cannabis, smoking, vaping, and consuming confectionery and baked goods are also prohibited by the law. Instead, customers can buy pills, lozenges, oils, suppositories, and topical patches. Although this has been made legal, there is still cause for concern because the majority of marijuana use and sales do not require a prescription, More specifically, I've had to listen to conversations where some people felt the need to give up their professions and education so they could sell marijuana because they believed it would be simpler and faster to do so than to work. This worries me because I believe it discourages young people from going to school and working. One of the participants in this conversation resigned from their job a few months ago to participate in the sale. Even though it is a lucrative industry that calls for licensing, these young people are not making an effort to follow the correct procedures, and disregarding their jobs and schooling will only cause additional problems down the road. Everyone needs to make a concerted effort to look into this problem and offer a better solution that will keep our youth in school and in the workforce. 11. Discuss how being more informed about the social sciences may help you understand global contemporary issues. A. Consider how understanding the ways social scientists examine human behaviors could influence the way you approach global challenges and questions. The social sciences involve comprehending society and how people interact with one another; as a result, they are extremely important to everyone as it aids in making more informed decisions about matters that directly impact our daily lives. A recent occurrence is the coronavirus pandemic, which practically brought major economic sectors of all countries to a standstill, claimed lives, and strained social cohesion because people had to practically avoid one another for fear of catching the virus. An anxiety attack caused a coworker of mine to stop working until this day out of fear that she might become infected and die. This eventually caused her to experience depression, which she has not yet fully recovered. Understanding people's attitudes toward the virus and its restrictions, as well as how this event affected their hygiene and relationships with others in the face of infectious disease, were all made possible by the social sciences.
