TYPES OF MODERN DRESSING 1. HYDROCOLLOIDS Hydrocolloid dressing designed to be elastic and adhesive containing jell. Hydrocolloid dressings are semipermeable, containing hydroactive particles that will expand or form a gel because they absorb wound fluid. When applied to a wound, drainage from the wound interacts with the components of the dressing to form a gel that creates a moist environment that can stimulate the growth of cell tissue for wound healing. The advantages are: 1. Maintains stable moisture in the wound and the area around the wound along with its function as an absorber of wound fluid 2. The dressing can be changed without causing trauma or pain, and does not stick to the wound 3. Comfortable for the skin surface 4. Economical and saves treatment time, minimizing dressing changes compared to 2. HYDROGELS Hydrogels are available in the form of non-adhesive sheets (such as fiber gauze, or gel) containing cross-linked hydrophilic polymers that can absorb water in large enough volumes without destroying the compactness or structure of the material. The gel will provide a cool, cool feeling to the wound, which will increase the patient's sense of comfort. The gel is placed directly on the wound surface, and is usually covered with a secondary dressing (foam or gauze) to maintain moisture at the level required to support wound healing. The indication for this dressing is to be used on types of wounds with little fluid, while the contraindication is wounds that ooze a lot The function of hydrogel is: 1.Creates a wound environment that remains moist 2.Soft and flexible for all types of wounds 3.Softens and destroys necrotic tissue, without damaging healthy tissue 4.Reduces pain because it has a cooling effect. 3. ALGINATE Derived from seaweed, turns into gel when mixed with wound fluid, a type of dressing that can absorb excessive amounts of wound fluid and stimulates the blood clotting process if minor bleeding occurs, if mixed with exudate, turns into gel. This dressing is indicated for superficial wounds with moderate to large exudates and for deep wounds with moderate to large exudates. Alginate is a primary dressing and requires a secondary dressing such as semi-permeable film, foam as a covering. 4. FOAM This type of dressing uses a silicone material that is glued to the surface in contact with the wound. Silicone helps prevent the foam dressing from sticking to the wound surface or around the skin at the edge of the wound. The result prevents wounds from being traumatized by bandages when changing bandages, and helps the healing process. This soft silicone wound dressing is designed for well-draining and extensive wounds. Contains Polyurethane foam, available in sheets orcavity filling. Advantages of using Foam 1. Foam has a high capacity to absorb large amounts of exudate 2. Foam is also able to absorb excess moisture, thereby reducing the risk of maceration 3. Does not cause pain and trauma to the wound tissue during replacement. 5. Transparent Films Dressing 1. Transparent, healing progress can be monitored without opening the dressing 2. Impermeable to bacteria and water, elastic and waterproof, so it can be worn when bathing 3. Economical, does not require dressing changes in a short period of time
