In this process, plants or plants with long roots are selected and planted in contaminated locations to absorb, accumulate, or convert contaminants into forms that are less harmful or easier to remove. The main principle of phytoremediation is that plants have the natural ability to absorb and accumulate certain compounds from their environment through physiological processes such as transpiration and photosynthesis. When these plants grow in contaminated soil, they can pull contaminants from the soil into their root systems. Once taken up by plants, these contaminants can accumulate in plant tissues or be converted into less harmful compounds through biochemical processes within the plant or by soil microbes that live symbiotically with plant roots. Phytoremediation has several advantages, including relatively low cost, can be applied in-situ without disturbing the environment, and can be applied in various types of soil and contaminated locations. However, the speed and effectiveness of phytoremediation depends on various factors, including the type of plant used, the type and extent of contamination, and other environmental conditions. Plants that are often used in phytoremediation include hyperaccumulator plants, such as flowering plants, grass and trees which have the natural ability to absorb and accumulate heavy metals or organic compounds from soil or water. Examples of plants that are often used in phytoremediation include plants such as chicory, sunflower, cabbage plants, and poplar tree species. Thus, phytoremediation provides an innovative and sustainable solution to address environmental contamination by harnessing the natural abilities of plants and soil microbes to clean and restore contaminated soil, water and air. The application of phytoremediation not only affects plants and soil microbes, but also has a broader impact on ecosystems and the environment as a whole.
