Courses : Forest Ecology Lecturer :Frischa Adellia Semester : 4thSemester, 2022/2023 Session Plant Host-Plant Resistance Plant Host-Plant Resistance refers to the ability of a plant to reduce damage caused by insect pests or pathogens by having genetic traits that make it less attractive to insects or pathogens, or able to withstand attacks better than other plant varieties. The use of plants with resistance to insect pests or pathogens is an important strategy for integrated pest and plant disease control. Resistance traits can be inherited genetically and integrated into plant varieties through plant breeding. The characteristics generally possessed by Host-Plant Resistance plants include: 1. Antibiosis Resistance: This plant produces compounds that inhibit the growth or cause death of insect pests or pathogens that interact with it. 2. Tolerance Resistance: This plant has the ability to continue to grow and produce optimally even though it is attacked by insects or pathogens, so that the damage caused by these attacks can be minimized. 3. Antixenosis Resistance or Non-preference: This plant is less attractive to insect pests, so insects tend to choose to eat or lay eggs on other plants that they prefer. 4. Resistance Based on Suction Inhibition: This plant has physical structures or compounds that inhibit sucking pest insects from sucking fluids from plant tissue. The application of Host-Plant Resistance plants can help farmers reduce losses caused by pest or disease attacks, as well as reduce dependence on chemical pesticides. In addition, the use of plants with resistance can also increase agricultural sustainability by reducing negative environmental impacts and extending the effective period of pest and disease control. Here are some examples of Host-Plant Resistance plants: 1. Leaf Rust Resistant Wheat (Puccinia spp.): Several wheat varieties have been developed with resistance to leaf rust, which is caused by various species of Puccinia fungi. Leaf rustresistant wheat plants have the ability to survive and produce better yields even when exposed to the pathogen. 2. Thrips-Resistant Peanuts (Thysanoptera spp.): Several peanut varieties have been developed with resistance to thrips attacks, small insects that cause damage to peanut leaves and fruit. Thrips-resistant peanut plants have lower levels of damage and higher yields. 3. Colorado Beetle Resistant Potatoes (Leptinotarsa decemlineata): Several potato varieties have been developed with resistance to Colorado beetle attacks, a pest that causes damage to potato leaves and tubers. Colorado beetle-resistant potatoes have the ability to reduce populations of the beetle and produce better tubers. 4. Tomatoes Resistant to Fusarium Wilt Disease (Fusarium spp.): Several tomato varieties have been developed with resistance to Fusarium wilt disease, which is caused by the fungus Fusarium spp. Tomatoes that are resistant to Fusarium wilt disease have the ability to survive and produce fruit even when exposed to this pathogen. 5. Armyworm Resistant Rice (Spodoptera spp.): Several rice varieties have been developed with resistance to armyworm attacks, insects that can cause damage to rice leaves and stems. Armyworm-resistant rice has the ability to reduce damage and increase crop yields. These Host-Plant Resistance Plants show how using varieties that are resistant to pest or disease attacks can help farmers reduce losses caused by these attacks and increase overall crop yields.
