LSAT PREP Sage Training – Week 6 Must be True Questions Must Be True Questions:    These questions use formal logic. Contain conditional or intersection statements. These are usually easy and freebies. How To Approach These Questions:       You are asked to select an answer choice that when the statements are true, the right answer is also true. You are formulating a valid argument. Take information from the stimulus and forces it down into the answer choice to prove one is correct. o You are taking an answer choice that is proven by the information presented in the stimulus.  Can be a paraphrase of part of the stimulus.  Logical consequence of one or more parts of the stimulus. Anticipation: o Anticipate the potential answer choices. o Read the question stem first. Diagram: o Writing out conditional statements, and drawing out a conclusion o Example:  People who fall down the stairs always break their left leg. Mary is a person and fell down the stairs.  People fall downstairs – break left leg.  Person – Mary fell down the stairs. These questions can always be proven by referring to the facts stated in the stimulus. Sample Question Stems:    If the statements above are true, which one of the following must be true? Which one can be properly inferred from the statements above? Which one of the following statements follows logically from the statements above? How to Answer These Questions:   Does the answer have to be true? The correct answer will be proven 100% by evidence in the passage. Structure of Must Be True Questions:  Ways to prove an answer choice is correct: o Use common sense:  Assume things.  Example: The sky is blue. o Common sense assumption: the sky is not red or orange.  Statements from the stimulus.  You can paraphrase.  Can be difficult on harder questions.  Statements that imply other statements:  Example: All animals hate wintertime o Foxes hate wintertime. o Bears hate wintertime. o Salmon hate wintertime. o ALL animals hate wintertime.  Combing Statements: o Can combine statements to make it easier. o Example: All Americans like McDonalds, and Alex is an American.  Combine: Alex likes McDonalds. Scope:     How far into the topic does your stimulus go? Out of the scop answer choices are the most prevalent wrong answer choice on the entire test. Relevancy vs Relatedness: o Something can be relevant to your stimulus.  Serves a purpose. o Something can be related to your stimulus.  Does not serve a purpose. This is not a 2 sided conversation. o Avoid doing this by explicitly defining the scope of whatever you read.
