Therapeutic Use for treatment of skin infections, bone and joint infections, UTIs, respiratory tract infections, intra-abdominal infections andsepticemia. Complications encephalopathy, seizures, aphasia, HA, C. Diff, rash, pruritus, bleeding, hemolytic anemia. Medication Administration IV: 1-2 g Q12 IM: 0.5-1 g Q12 Contraindications/Precautions Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to penicillins. Use cautiously in renal impairment, GI disease, hepatic dysfunction, pregnancy, geriatric patients. Nursing Interventions Assess patient for infection, Obtain specimens for culture and sensitivity before initiating therapy, monitor for s/s of anaphylaxis, monitor bowel function. Interactions Probenecid, loop diuretics, or aminoglycosides Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Resolution of s/s of infection Teach patient to report signs of superinfection. Instruct patient to notify HCP if fever or diarrhea develop.
