Defining Landscape - A protected area where the interaction of people and nature over time has produced an area of distinct character with significant ecological, biological, cultural and scenic value: and where safeguarding the integrity of this interaction is vital to protecting and sustaining the area and its associated nature conservation and other values - European Landscape Convention, Article 1. • "An area, as perceived by people, whose character is the result of the action and interaction of natural and/or human factors". - Guidelines for the implementation of the European Landscape Convention, Recommendation cm/rec 2008 of the Committee of Ministers to Member States, para 1.3 • "As an essential component of people's surroundings, an expression of the diversity of their shared cultural and natural heritage, and a foundation of their identity."
