Density is defined as the ratio of the mass of a substance to its volume. Density is an example of an intensive property, which is a property of a substance that does not depend on the quantity of the substance. If you have pure gold, for example, its density at 20° C is 19.3 grams per centimeter cubed. Whether you have 50 grams of gold or 50 kilograms, it has the same density. Mass and volume are both examples of extensive properties, which are properties of a substance that do depend on quantity.
