Chapter 7: Social Process Theory Social Process Theories - Views criminality as a function of people’s interactions with various organizations, institutions, individua processes in society. - ASB is a result of their involvement with significant social groups (family, peers, neighbors) and institutions (schools, CJ agencies) - Crime is a learned behavior - 3 main theories: social learning, social control, social reaction - Socialization is the key to understanding criminal behavior choices - Socialization occurs through contact with significant others - Anyone can turn to ASB if their socialization is damaging/destructive; not focused in lower-class - ASB can be reversed and criminals turned around by proper resocialization and prosocial interact Institutions of Socialization - Interaction with key social institutions helps control human behavior - Family Relations - Family-crime relationship is significant across racial, ethnic, and gender lines; frequently in empirical research - - - Parenting techniques, attachment, family history of crime, family violence - Family characteristics may be a function of family stress Educational Experiences - School to prison pipeline - Policies/practices that encourage harsh tactics such as physical restraint, police pre school, and automatic punishments that result in out-of-class time have been show ”push” students out of the classroom and into the CJ system - Research shows being suspended increases the likelihood that students will experience criminal victimization, criminal involvement, and incarceration adults - Black students are 3.5 times more likely to be suspended/expelled compare white classmates Educational Experience (continued) - Bullying Peer Relationships - - Antisocial vs prosocial peers - Antisocial friends are “sticky;” influence continues throughout lifespan Robust association between antisocial peers and antisocial behavior, but hard to determine direction of the relationship - Which came first, antisocial behavior or delinquent peers? Religion, Beliefs, and Values - Participation vs beliefs - Primarily benefits youth living in disorganized high crime areas Social Process Theories Social Learning: Differential Association Theory - SLT: crime is a product of learning the norms, values, and behaviors associated with criminal activity - Can involve the actual techniques of crime as well as the psychological aspects of criminality - 9 Principles of Sutherland’s Differential Association Theory - Criminal behavior is learned - - Criminal behavior is learned as a by-product of interacting with others - People actively learn as they are socialized and interact with others who may serve as teac crime Learning behavior occurs within intimate personal groups - Family, friends, peers - Learning criminal behavior involves assimilating the techniques of committing crime, including m drives, rationalizations, and attitudes - The specific direction of motives and drives is learned from perceptions of various aspects of the favorable or unfavorable - Culture conflict: result of exposure to opposing norms, attitudes, and definitions of right a moral and immoral - Conflict of social attitudes and cultural norms A person becomes a criminal when he or she perceives more favorable than unfavorable conseque the law - Individuals are exposed to an excess of definitions favorable toward criminality and are re counteracting forces - Incorporates differential association concepts with elements of psychological learning theory - Builds upon DAT by specifying the mechanisms and processes through which criminal learning ta - Differential Reinforcement: behavior is reinforced by being either rewarded or punished w - interacting with others - Negative Reinforcement: using either negative stimuli or loss of reward to curtail unwante People learn to evaluate their own behavior through their interactions with significant others and lives -
