Sustainable Home Creation This worksheet is to show how you will create a more sustainable home. The key is to defend your choices with facts and citing your sources, you do not need to choose a single family home. Cite sources! Current Described your indoor living space (i.e., square feet) 900 sq ft home on two levels. Living room, dining room, four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a laundry room. We don’t really do much now to have a sustainable home. Describe the location of your home and why it would be the best for you. Make sure to address: climate, geography, rural/urban/or suburban. I live in the south suburbs of Chicago. It is right outside of the Chicago city limits. We have the typical Chicago area climate. The geography is urban in nature. I live just south and just east of foresty type areas. Right now it is currently easily accessible to several methods of transportation. 3 materials in your home and how they can be more sustainable. 1) Appliances: They are rather old and I am not sure if they have the energy star label 2) Water Heater: It is a very old one. Probably at least five to ten years old. It can be Future Improvements I will install a tankless water heater, all appliances will surely have the Energy Star label on them. I will also install energy efficient doors and windows on the home. If the village allows for it, I will also install solar panels on the top of the home. I will be relocating soon. I do not know what the area will look like. But what I do know is that it will have to be accessible to public transportation and shopping. 1) All appliances must be the most energy efficient appliances out there. 2) I would install a tankless water heater. This not only saves on water but electricity Energy use replaced to a more energy efficient one. 3) Furnace: I am quite sure that the original furnace is still here. That could stand to be replaced as well. What are 3 things that use the most energy in your home? 1) Fridge 2) Washing Machine 3) Televisions and gas as well. 3) I would install cold climate heat pumps with on site solar How can you decrease your energy consumption? 1) Replace the fridge with a newer model. 2) We would limit the use of the washing machine. Currently, if you have something dirty, you just wash that one thing instead of waiting for a full load 3) If we are not in the room, the television can be turned off. Water use What are 3 things that use the most water in your home? 1) Washing Machine 2) Kitchen Sink 3) Showers How can you decrease your water consumption? 1) One wash day for the entire household and it must be a full load 2) I would not have the water running as much as I currently do 3) I would limit the showers to maybe ten minutes per day. I am currently in there for maybe twenty to thirty minutes at a time
