What is the origin of the Mormon Church? Who is the founder, and what did he discover? Why does the group call itself "The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints"? Explain how Mormons would understand each term in the name, including "Jesus Christ," "latter-day," and "Saints." Use the lecture slides and Young, pages 202-204 ("The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: Christ's Kingdom in America"). Joseph Smith is the founder of the church. He had a vision of God the father and God the son in 1820. In another revelation in 1823, the angel Moroni told him to dig up a book of golden plates, in Manchester New York. He used the two stones, Urim and Thummim, to translate them from Egyptian hieroglyphs to English. This became “the 3rd testament” or the Book of Mormon in 1830. Mormons believe Jesus Christ was going to return soon, and in America. They refer to themselves as “latter day saints” because they will return to the kingdom of God, during the second coming of Jesus. In the lecture, Dr. Wilson defined the terms "apocalyptic," and "adventist". Using your notes and your textbook (p. 196, "Seventh-day Adventism"), first explain these terms, then explain the origin and meaning of the name, "Seventh Day Adventist." Is this group a cult or a sect? Why? The “Seventh day” is referring to the Sabbath, from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. “Adventist” means one who is ready for the second coming of Christ. “Apocalyptic” is referring to second coming, or day of judgement, as told by the book of revelation. The Seventh day Adventism is a sect, and not a cult, because it has ancient biblical roots, and stems from Christianity.
