Blood Pressure Cuff Parts A basic, nonelectronic blood-pressure cuff consists of the cuff, tubing, inflation bulb, and a pressure-monitoring device (gauge). The cuff wraps around your patient's upper arm and is secured with Velcro". The cuff is typically marked with arrows for alignment with the left or the right brachial artery. There are two tubes leading from the cuff. One of these tubes connects to the inflation bulb, and the other connects to the pressure-monitoring device (gauge). The inflation bulb is used to inflate the cuff with air while the pressure within the cuff transfers through the tubing to the pressure-monitoring device. The bulb has a pressure-release valve to secure the air within the cuff and to allow the cuff to deflate at the desired rate. The aneroid pressure gauge displays pressure in millimeter calibrations that correlate with the units of measurement (millimeters of mercury, or mm Hg) traditionally used for documenting blood pressure. The gauge allows you to visualize the pressure relationship of the arterial blood as you release air slowly from the cuff.
