ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATE: Therapeutic Procedure STUDENT NAME _____________________________________ Oxygen Therapy PROCEDURE NAME ____________________________________________________________________ REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER ___________ Description of Procedure Oxygen Therapy is a treatment that provides extra oxygen to breathe in. It is also called supplemental oxygen. It is only available through a prescription from a health care provider. One may get it in the hospital, another medical setting, or at home. Some people only need it for a short period of time. Others will need long-term oxygen therapy. Indications -COPD -Pneumonia -COVID-19 -A severe asthma attack -Late-stage heart failure -Cystic fibrosis -Sleep apnea CONSIDERATIONS Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Pre- Assess the need for O2 therapy and obtain prescription Intra- Monitor O2 levels and patient's tolerance for O2 prescription. Assess the need for increased or decreased O2 therapy Post- Monitor O2 levels post O2 therapy. Observe for patient's tolerance without O2 therapy and assess for need of continued O2 therapy. Outcomes/Evaluation -Adequate oxygenation -Tolerance for ADL's -Treat hypoxia/hypoxemia Potential Complications -O2 toxicity -Dry or bloody nose -Tiredness -Morning headaches -Fire Risk Client Education -Educate client on reason for O2 therapy, treatment, and the outcomes O2 therapy is expected to accomplish -Inform patient about fire risk associated with O2 therapy Nursing Interventions -Assess for S&S of O2 toxicity -Apply adequate humidification to prevent dry or bloody nose -Keep flammable material away from patient and inform patient and visitors that no smoking is allowed. -Educate patient and visitors about the fire risk associated with O2 therapy ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATES
