STUDENT NAME SKILL NAME Mobility & Immobility: Climbing stairs with crutches REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER CH 40 Description of Skill Crutches are assistive devices used to help patients ambulate and maintain or aid in regaining body ailment and stability, decrease musculoskeletal system changes, & achieve full/optimal ROM, and prevent contractures. Indications Fractured leg, foot, cast or boot, sprained ankles Weakness of the lower extremities Amputation Balance/coordination impairment Outcomes/Evaluation Evaluate patient teaching by using teach back method Evaluate response to activity & any adjustments that may be needed through oral feedback Potential Complications Improper use can lead to nerve damage on axilla Irritation of skin through rubbing under the arm Long-term use can result in wrist or hand injuring due to stress over the upper portion of the hand ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATES CONSIDERATIONS Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Pre: Assess ROM capability, muscle tone, monitor gait, correct fit of crutches, & adjust to patient's height: 2-3 finger widths, hands on hand grips w/ elbow flexed at 30 degrees. Stand with straight back, hips, head, neck and do not place weight on axilla. Educate on proper use. Client Education Place weight on the hand grips not the crutch rest pad Begin step as if using injured foot, but shift weight to crutches. Body swings forward between crutches and finish step with uninjured leg. When uninjured leg is on ground, move crutches ahead to prepare for next step. Nursing Interventions Intra: Observe for correct use. Affected leg goes down first & the crutches move with the affected leg. Go up with the good leg and move the injured leg & crutches next.
