Inversion of Gulf Stream Profiles
Geostrophic calculation
We have prepared a section across the Gulf Stream at 70 W.
There actually has been a lot of processing to get to this point – the profiles were averaged
and smoothed, etc.
You can contour this using the links on the page.
Look at the geostrophic velocity calculated from the exact dynamic height and compare it to that calculated from σθ

What are the differences?
PV calculation
You can calculate the PV from either the full geostrophic velocity or the version
calculated from σθ . You just need to set the appropriate field in the menu; you can also
use various forms of PV

Inversion
You can now invert the various forms of PV and compare the velocities to the original
data. In addition, you can add extra surface gradients or interior sources.Try various
combinations of PV field and linear/nonlinear inversions. Note that any functions for “q,”
“strat,” “sigs,” or “sigb” will be added to the values. Can you make an artificial PV
structure which gives a fairly realistic flow?
