We're about 17% protein and 3% Nitrogen. What happens to Nitrogen? It goes to work like machines and then breaks. Urine: Contains Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. Sewage Treatment: Decomposes waste but doesn't remove Nitrogen and Phosphorus. Brownsville's effluent: Gets dumped into Arroyo Colorado. Nitrogen is removed by: Bacteria, phytoplankton, seaweed, and seagrasses. Average depth: 3699 meters. 200 meters: Only suitable for phytoplankton. Nitrogen is the limiting nutrient in coastal waters. Too much Nitrogen: Mississippi River Dead Zone. Where does Nitrogen go? Seagrass, seaweed, and epiphytes. What do we do? Control Nitrogen and Phosphorus. Prevents eutrophication. More people moving to the coast: More Nitrogen and Phosphorus is entered.
