The General Rules of CSE Citing

The importance of citing relevant scientific journals in Biology cannot be underestimated when you are required to implement a CSE style guide for your research paper. As a rule, the majority of CSE papers deal with Biology, Genetics, and Chemistry since it is a research writing format that has been previously used exclusively for these subjects.

These days the Council of Science Editors (CSE) has a relative resemblance to the Chicago style, yet still offers several unique features like the abbreviation of journal titles, which is always tricky for most college students. Thankfully, one can implement the NCBI Journal Database tool that helps to locate abbreviations. Alternatively, you can check with your institution’s library for an abbreviations list related to your course.

Some other rules include:

  • No periods are allowed in the abbreviation of journal titles.
  • The initials also go without periods, like in (Johnson RN).
  • The last Surname mentioned in your citation is connected with the help of a comma, meaning there is no “and” or “&”.
  • Just like in APA or MLA styles, the use of a hanging indent must be present.

Another important point of CSE journal citation:

  • You can use Citation-sequence and citation-name styles, which will follow the usual pattern of “author-article-journal title”.
  • The other, Name-year style, will have a slightly different scheme by using “Author’s – Date – Article Title – Journal Title” pattern.
  • Note how the place of the year is moved forward depending on the scientific style used.

What Information is Required to Cite Journal Entries Correctly

In terms of how to cite scientific journal in CSE, the list of requirements fits both “Citation-Name” and “Name-Year” because the only difference we have is where the year is being placed. As for the other parts, they remain the same. See our universal list of requirements template:

  • Surname First and Middle Name Initials. If there is more than one author, it must be separated with a comma.
  • Publication date. It always comes next in the Name-Year system, which is used most of the time. You must include the year if it is a scholarly journal publication. If you deal with a magazine, it must have “year-month”. Newspapers require the full date. Online sources also require citation date with abbreviated month and day.
  • Title (subtitle) of our source comes next. Remember that only the first word in the title and subtitle are capitalized.
  • Title of our magazine. It must be abbreviated. If you cannot find related information, just place [Internet] instead.
  • Issue volume and number.
  • Page number(s)
  • Available from: the URL.
  • DOI (if available)
