1/31/12   Fathers/patres  &  Struggles  of  the  Orders:   ca.  500-­‐287  BC   • Focus  on  seeing  how  what  we  learned  so  far   about  the  power  of  fathers  in  a  family   translates  up  to  the  poli;cal  and  social  system   of  the  Republic  as  a  whole.   – Patriapotestas  on  the  level  of  the  family   – Another  kind  of  father:  Patres/Senators/Patricians   • We’ll  look  at  the  struggle  of  the  orders   – Finally,  one  more  kind  of  father:  patron   TerracoHa  statue  from  1st  cent.  AD   (Pompeii)   patriapotestas  of  the  paterfamilias   Cicero  on  Cato  the  Elder:    “He  [Cato]  wielded  not  merely      authority  but  absolute  command  (imperium)   over  his  family  (familia).      His  slaves  feared  him,  his  children  venerated   him,  all  loved  him.  In  that  household,   ancestral  custom  (mos  maiorum)  and   discipline  held  sway.”   1   1/31/12   Lucius  Manlius  Imperiosus,  “the  Imperious”   •   4th  cent.  BC   • Hated  by  all  for  his  excessive  cruelty.   • One  charge  ag.  him:  he  uses  patriapotestas   unfairly  to  punish  innocent  son.   • BUT–  his  unfairly  treated  son  (Titus  Manlius   Torquatus)  not  only  defends  him  but  even   threatens  father’s  enemies  with  violence!   • AND—the  Roman  people  are  so  impressed  by   son’s  du;ful  (though  surprising  &  violent)   behavior  that  they  elect  him  to  important   magistracy!   The  State  as  a  Family  in  Macrocosm   • Paternalism  was  cornerstone  not  only  of  Roman   family  but  also  of  Roman  society  &  poli;cal  life.   • Senators:  patres  conscripA       • Augustus  =  Pater  Patriae,  Father  of  His  Country   (lit.  Fatherland)   2   1/31/12   Patricians  /  patricii   • A  closed  caste  of  aristocra;c  Roman  ci;zens:   – senatorial  class  (desc.  from  king’s  original  council  of   elders,  called  the  senators—  cf.  senex,  old  man)   – status  was  hereditary   • gens  (pl.  gentes),  clan,  kinship  group     – ex.,  gens  Iulia:  Gaius  Julius  Caesar              (praenomen,  nomen,  cognomen)   – exclusive:  only  21  patrician  gentes  in  4th  cent.  BC   • patricians  clans/gentes  monopolized  power  over:   – Magistracies/poli;cal  offices  un;l  at  least  366  BC   – Land  (distribu;on  of  ager  publicus)   –  state  religious  rites  and  priesthoods  un;l  300  BC   – Calendar  of  state   – Knowledge  of  the  laws   Plebeians:  Rebelling  ag.  the  “fathers”   -­‐Who  were  they?
