Lake of Lentik's Rich and Complex Ecosystem A lake is a naturally stagnant body of water, formed in a basin or depression on the earth's surface. Lakes have an important role in the hydrological cycle, providing habitat for a variety of organisms, and providing various benefits for humans. However, lakes are also vulnerable to environmental changes and human activities. Characteristics of the lake The lake has several characteristics that distinguish it from other freshwater ecosystems: • Stagnant Water: The water of a lake does not flow like a river, but it experiences slower movement, such as small currents or waves. • Zones Based on Light Penetration: o Photic: The upper layer that can be penetrated by sunlight, allowing photosynthesis by phytoplankton and aquatic plants. o Aphotic: The impermeable underlayer of sunlight, dominated by decomposers and light-independent organisms. • Thermoclin: The transition layer between the warm water layer above (epilimnion) and the cold water layer below (hipolymnion). Thermoclines can block the mixing of water and nutrients between the two layers. • Stratification: The vertical division of the lake into layers with differences in temperature, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients. Four Major Districts of the Lake 1. Litoral: A shallow area on the edge of a lake that is exposed to full sun. Overgrown by rooted aquatic plants and inhabited by a variety of organisms, such as insects, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and birds. 2. Limnetic: An area of free water that is far from the edge and can still be penetrated by sunlight. It is dominated by phytoplankton and zooplankton, as well as small fish. 3. Profundal: An inner area that is not penetrated by sunlight. It is dominated by decomposers and bacteria that decompose detritus (dead organic matter) that sinks from the upper layer. 4. Benthic: The bottom of the lake where bentos (organisms that live on the bottom of the water) live, such as worms, mollusks, and bacteria. Classification of Lakes Based on Productivity • Oligotrophic: Deep lakes with few nutrients and low productivity. The water is clear, few organisms, and high dissolved oxygen. • Eutrophic: A shallow lake with a lot of nutrients and high productivity. The water is cloudy, many organisms, and low dissolved oxygen in the profundal layer. • Mesotrophic: A lake with moderate levels of nutrition and productivity. Classification of Lakes Based on Water Circulation Patterns • Dimictic: Twice a year of thorough mixing of water, usually in spring and fall. • Monomic: One thorough mixing of water in a year. • Polymic: Frequent mixing of water throughout the year. • Oligomic: Rare mixing of water. • Meromictic: There is no thorough mixing of water due to chemical differences between water layers. Changes in Lake Ecosystems Lake ecosystems can change naturally or as a result of human activities. Natural changes can occur due to sedimentation processes, climate change, or volcanic activity. Human activities, such as waste disposal, excessive use of fertilizers, and the introduction of invasive species, can lead to eutrophication, pollution, and a decrease in biodiversity.
