DEWI IKA (2110501032) AUGUSTA UNIVERSITY Cyber threats : Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks 1. Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks: what are they? A cyberattack known as a denial-of-service (DoS) attempt seeks to prevent authorized users from using a service or system. The attack overloads the resources of the targeted system with traffic or requests, preventing it from handling valid requests and exhausting its resources. A DoS attack is often carried out by flooding a targeted system or service with requests or traffic. The system's resources, including processing speed, memory, and bandwidth, are overloaded by the volume of traffic or requests, preventing it from responding to valid requests. Due to this, the system becomes sluggish, unresponsive, or even crashes. Websites, servers, routers, and various other network devices are just a few of the systems and services that might be the target of DoS attacks. DoS assaults can occasionally be used as a deterrent to draw notice away from other criminal actions like theft of data or network intrusion. DoS attacks can be conducted in a number of ways, such as by flooding a system with information or requests, taking advantage of software or protocol flaws, or utilizing amplification techniques to increase the volume of data sent to the target. Similarly to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) assaults, DoS attacks can come from a single device or a group of devices. 2. What kinds of DoS assaults are there? Here are a number of distinct DoS assaults, including: a) Network-based assaults: During these attacks, a system is bombarded with traffic or demands, clogging up its bandwidth and prevent authorized users from using it. b) Attacks against the application layer of a system, including a web server, involve making requests that take up resources and render the system inaccessible to authorized users. c) Attacks such as distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) make it more difficult to protect against a system by flooding it with traffic or requests. 3. How may DoS assaults be stopped or lessened? DoS attacks must be prevented or mitigated using a multi-layered strategy that combines both technical as well as non-technical techniques. Some methods for avoiding or minimizing DoS attacks are as follows: a) Using intrusion detection systems, firewalls, and other security measures to identify and stop threats. b) Reduce the effect of DoS assaults by putting speed-limiting and traffic shaping mechanisms in place. c) Designing durable, high-traffic-volume-supporting systems and applications. d) Collaborating with Internet service providers (ISPs) and additional third-party providers to restrict traffic from sources that are known to be harmful. e) To find vulnerabilities and fix them before they may be exploited by conducting routine security audits and assessments. Organizations may lower the danger of DoS attacks and lessen the effect if they do happen by putting these precautions into place and remaining watchful.
