Medication Alendronate Sodium (Fosamax) Biphosphates PURPOSE OF MEDICATION Expected Pharmacological Action slows bone loss to help maintain strong bones and reduce risk of fractures Therapeutic Use Prevent and treat bone loss Complications -stomach pain -acid reflux -constipation -diarrhea Medication Administration -constipation -upset stomach -nausea -muscle and joint pain Drink with water only, at least 30 minutes before breakfast and other daily medications Contraindications/Precautions -Atrial ﬁb -Vit. D deﬁcient -dysphagia -hypocalcemia Interactions Calcium and iron supplements, vitamins, antacids, coffee, tea, soda, mineral water, calcium enriched juices Nursing Interventions Instruct patient to remain upright for 30 min after taking to minimize esophageal irritation discontinue if painful or difﬁculty swallowing and/or heart burn occur Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness -Prevention or decrease in the progression of osteoporosis. Reassess need for medication. Consider d/c after 3-5 years in patients with low risk of fractures A ATI, (2020) Do not eat, drink , or take other medications for at least 30 minutes Do not lie down for at least 30 minute A7
