Material Summary Urry's Theory of Tourist Views in Tourism Management Chapter 3.6 Urry's Theory of the 'Tourist Gaze' According to John Urry in his book The Tourist Gaze: Leisure and Travel in Contemporary Societies (1990), by studying how social groups form the Tourist Gaze, we can understand what usually happens in "normal society", or the things that generally done but may be hidden in society. This tourist view includes subjectivity in the relationship between tourists and the places they visit, and consists of 9 points: 1. Tourism is a leisure activity that requires the opposite (eg: work) 2. Tourism requires space and time 3. Tourists who go far from their area of origin definitely have the intention to return 4. The objects in the tourist's view are different from work 5. Many people from all over the world travel, forming new types of social relationships 6. Tourists have subjective factors in choosing a destination, and there are their own expectations 7. The views sought by tourists are different from those encountered every day 8. Tourist views are built through signs 9. There have been many tourist experts who have tried to carry out new searches regarding tourist views Tourist views consist of many differences between individuals, groups, and in various historical times/periods, so that there is no one "tourist experience" that is most appropriate for all tourists. Similar to the views of Boorstin (1964) and Baudrillard (1988), Urry considers tourism as a pseudo-event. Because: 'Isolated from the host environment and local society, mass tourists travel in guided groups and find pleasure in inauthentic, made-up attractions, easily enjoying "pseudoevents" and ignoring the "real" world outside' ( Urry, 2002, p. 7) Urry also divided tourists' views into 2 types, namely 'romantic' and 'collective'. The romantic type gravitates towards solitude and privacy, such as untouched nature, landscapes and suburbs. In other words, very individual. Meanwhile, from a collective perspective it is the presence of many people in one place that has meaning. In this view, the presence of people from various parts of the world provides its own charm and excitement. In the book The Tourist Gaze 3.0, which has been updated and expanded by Jonas Larsen, explains the mobility paradigm more clearly. The Internet, virtual social networks and travel are considered different aspects of the same process. When traveling, it is important to post photos because it increases the status and importance of tourists. In an interview with John Urry in 2011, he explained that there were many challenges in writing the third book. He needed to further clarify the relationship between sight and the other senses and make his main thesis clearer; paying attention to how tourists practice and act in various types of travel; and takes into account travel impacts and costs incurred by tourists and communities as well as the physical environment in which they travel. The greatest critique and guideline of The Tourist Gaze is perhaps its study of the transformation of places motivated by the tourist gaze. In other words, tourists' desires and views condition the 'sterilization' and standardization of destinations, thereby generating more revenue and profits for destinations.
