RESUME OF TOURISM THEORY BOOK BY LOHMAN PEARCE AND ELLIOT’S TRIP INDEX Pearce and Elliot (1983) stated that Trip Index (TI) is a comparison between the amount of time spent by tourists at a tourist destination with the total time of all tourists who carry out tourism activities. Although in knowing the amount of time spent per night by tourists who stay/live in the tourist area targeted by the perpetrators, it is used as a benchmark to evaluate how the tourists carry out their tourism trips, for example "staying 1 night" does not indicate that the destination visited by the tourist is a priority destination. Example: If the tourist only spends 1 night at a tourist destination, but takes a 10day vacation to two other destinations. This shows that the first destination is not more important than the other two tourist destinations. Conversely, if tourists only stay 1 night or it is the last night spent by the tourist at a tourist destination, the tourist visit is the most important priority compared to other tourist destinations. Formula and Formula to calculate Trip Index (TI) as follows: TI = (dn/tn) x 100 Description: • TI: Trip Index of the tourist destination (maximum TI: 100). • dn: Length of time spent by tourists in one night. tn: Length of time spent by tourists on vacation. • The number 100 indicates the maximum value of the Trip Index. The existence of the Trip Index is a unit of measurement to find out the priority destinations that tourists visit. The greater the Trip Index indicates that the destination is a priority destination visited by tourists, conversely, the smaller the Trip Index indicates that the destination is not the main destination that tourists want to visit. The following is the Interval classification of the Trip Index: • On transit or holiday trips: TI = 0. • Short Stop: 0 < TI 10. • Intermediate Stop: 10 < TI 20. • Long Stop: 20 < TI 50. • Primary Destination: 50 < TI < 100. • Only Destination: TI = 100. Case Study: According to Pierce & Elliot, They classified two tourist destinations in New Zealand: Westland National Park & Christchurch. In this case, tourists were asked about how long they stayed in the area, along with the total time they spent on vacation. In some cases of foreign tourists, tourists were only interested in how long they stayed in New Zealand. Research Results: 1. The Westland National Park area is classified as a short-stop destination. Because more than half of the respondents have TI between 1 and 10. 2. The Christchurch area is also a stopping destination. However, Christchurch is often visited by tourists by chance. 3. Even so, in fact tourists spend more time in the city compared to Westland National Park.
