TOURISM THEORY RESUME MARIOT’S MODEL OF TOURIST FLOW Definition of Tourist Flow Tourist flow or tourist flow is a spatial interaction between places in the movement (mobility) of tourists, namely between the area of origin (residence) and the destination area (tourist destination), where tourists will leave their area of origin and visit an area for tourism. The existence of this tourist flow can help tourism actors, providers and tourism managers understand and manage the flow or mobility of tourists to their desired destinations. The Tourist Flows Model was originally developed as an infrastructure planning tool for local governments but has since developed beyond that as a multi-purpose tool for understanding tourism at the local and national levels. Dimensions of The Tourist Flows Model The following are dimensions or indicators that influence the occurrence of the tourist flow cycle: 1) Tourist type • International traveler • Domestic overnight traveler • Domestic day traveler 2) Holiday season • Low season • High season • Peak season 3) Mode of transportation • Land • Air • Sea Peter Mariot’s Model of Tourist Flows The Marriott tourist flow model has similarities with the Campbell model in recreation and tourism travel, in this Marriott tourist flow model focuses on “connections” or travel components in the tourism system. The connection that Mariot means is the route that tourists take when they are on a tourist trip. The tourist flow model according to Peter Mariot (1983) uses between two locations, namely the tourist's residence (Place of permanent residence) and the tourist destination (Tourist center). According to Mariot, tourists can use three routes to travel, seen from the picture, the tourist trip can be passed through the access route, the recreation route and the return route. The access route and recreation route provide a direct connection between the two locations (tourist residence and destination), while the return route is passed by tourists to leave the destination to the tourist's place of residence (return route). On the recreation route, several attractions or attractions are offered to tourists to attract their attention, the recreation route can complement the tourist destination or the journey to the destination. In this case, the concept of traveling is based on the desire of tourists to visit several destinations in meeting recreational needs with several other tourist motivations. Leiper (1979) Tourism system Leiper's tourism system theory has similarities with the Mariot tourist flow model. According to Leiper (1979), the tourism system involves five elements, consisting of tourists, the tourism industry, the area of origin, transit routes, and destinations. In this case, tourist flows refer to the movement of tourists starting from their place of origin, through the departing traveler route to go to a destination and travel in the area. Then there is a transit route, on the transit route tourists can relax and stay for a few days before continuing their journey to the main destination. Then after finishing their vacation, tourists will go through the returning traveler route to return to their home area.
