SERVANT LEADERSHIP CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background Researchers Hamide and Nikooparvar (2012) argue that there are various leadership styles used. Among others, authoritarians and dictators who give room for opinion and the like. However, the best leadership is servant leadership. Servant leadership was first recognized in 1970. Although it has been around for almost half a century, the servant leadership style has only been explored and applied in recent years. Greenleaf concluded that the leader that everyone wants most is to be able to be a good servant. He believes this will be the capital of one's success in leading. Basically, the quality of leadership is done to provide solutions for various parties, both inside and outside the organization. Servant leadership is constructed by two terms, namely leader and servant. Both terms play two different roles at the same time, namely serving and leading. It may be difficult to accept that as leaders, they also serve. Serving and leading at the same time: leaders who serve and servants who lead. Wis (2002) further views servant leaders as required to serve, and see their life as a mission of service. In addition, Lee and Zemke (1993) argue that the purpose of leaders' existence is to serve their followers and earn their trust. Another concept of servant leadership theory is other-oriented, the hallmark of servant leadership, which focuses on the interests and well-being of others. Therefore, if one wants to be a leader, one must sacrifice individualistic desires for the common good (Joseph, 1997). CHAPTER II DISCUSSION A. And allowed to give opinions, and additional answers to any questions. D. Content or content of learning materials In essence, in an organization or group requires someone who will serve as a role model in running the organization or group. Surely this person has more abilities than others so that he can embrace his members to be able to work together. Classically, leadership in English is referred to as leadership which means being a leader power of leading: the qualities of a leader. But in terminology, there are several leadership according to experts who are viewed from various perspectives depending on which angle the experts view the nature of leadership. According to Encep Syarifudin (2002: 139) leadership is a person's ability to influence, encourage, invite, guide, direct or force others to do. This can be seen in the process of leading that occurs in relationships between humans and other humans, as well as between individuals and groups of temporarily organized individuals.individuals organized temporarily or permanently in a container called an organization, institution, office, or other forms of groups. According to Ralp M. Stogdill (1990) leadership is the process of influencing the activities of organized groups towards the determination and achievement of goals. According to Bass & Bass (2008: 25) defines leadership as the interaction of two or more people in a structured group or re-structure the situation of perceptions and expectations of members. The two people are leaders with subordinates. Both or more equalize perceptions and expectations in order to have the same mindset, attitude pattern, and action pattern in meeting mutual expectations. So it can be drawn a red thread that leadership is a trait possessed by all human individuals in terms of influencing other individuals with different leadership traits of each individual and has its own authority. Leadership is also a trait to influence, encourage, provide guidance and direction for individuals or subordinates in the organization so that it is organized in an effort to achieve goals. E. Basic Concept of Servant Leadership Servant leadership is a leadership theory proposed by Robert K. Greenleaf in his book entitled "The Servant as Leader" he combines the best elements of leadership based on the services that leaders provide to others in achieving organizational goals. Greenleaf sees servant leadership as a charismatic leadership behavior or style that is influenced by morals, leadership with servant leadership has the characteristics of influencing subordinates in achieving organizational goals, in the form of: humanity, relational power, autonomy, moral development of followers, and emulation of leader's service orientation. Spears (1994) argues that servant leadership is because many people in companies, institutions, and non-profit or non-profit organizations are looking for new and better ways to integrate work with personal and spiritual growth. Meanwhile, Eva, Dkk (2019) summarized the definition of servant leadership divided into three points, namely: a) A leadership approach that is oriented towards others b) Realized through prioritizing the needs and interests of team members one-on-one; c) Revisiting their former concern for self towards concern for others in the organization and the larger community. According to Spears, a service-first leader begins with one's natural sense of wanting to serve and to put service first. Subsequently, this conscious choice brings aspiration and drive in leading others. In addition to influencing how these employees behave, managers must certainly master things such as management which is usually needed to overcome complexity by creating order by drawing up formal plans, designing a strict organizational structure, after that monitoring the results that have been carried out by comparing them with the previously set plans. Then the management style in terms of leading and serving in harmony, and there is interaction with the environment. A servant leader is someone who has the strength to serve and lead, the most important thing is to be able to combine the two to strengthen each other positively (Trompenaars and Voerman).So this servant leadership starts from an unconscious impulse that makes leaders motivate their members to improve the abilities of their members so that they can grow and develop together to progress and achieve target goals. 1. Servant Leadership Priorities In servant leadership, it can be seen that the priority is the common interest rather than their own interests, which is the main focus of servant leadership on the growth and welfare of their organizational members. In its implementation, the leader will have an open nature and generate motivation for all members of the organization, so that they will participate actively and creatively to realize the achievement of goals. 2. Servant Leadership Character Spears (2002: 27-29) describes ten characteristics of servant leadership, namely: a. Listening Servant leadership listens attentively to others, identifies and helps clarify the wishes of the group, as well as listening to one's own inner voice. b. Empathy Servant leaders are those who seek to understand colleagues and are able to empathize with others. c. Healing Servant leaders are able to create emotional healing and relationships themselves, or relationships with others, because relationships are a force for transformation and integration. d. Awareness Awareness to understand issues involving ethics, power, and values. Seeing situations from a balanced position that is more integrated e. Persuasion Servant leaders seek to convince others rather than force compliance. This is the one thing that most distinguishes the traditional authoritarian model from servant leadership. f. Conceptualization The ability to look at problems from a conceptualization perspective means longterm or visionary thinking on a broader basis. g. Foresight Being observant or meticulous in understanding lessons from the past, current realities, and possible consequences of decisions for the future. h. Openness (stewardship) Emphasizing openness and persuasion to build trust from others. i. Commitment to the growth of people Responsibility to make efforts to enhance the professional growth of employees and the organization j. Building Community Identifies ways to build community. 3. Advantages of Servant Leadership a) Increases commitment to members of the organization. b) Increases empathy. c) Collaborative decision-making. d) Increasing team member satisfaction. e) Increases morale. 4. Disadvantages of Servant Leadership a) It takes a lot of time to make decisions. b) Leaders can be seen as indecisive. F. Servant Leadership Implementation 1. A servant leader will always walk alongside their team members and lead by example. A servant leader's team cares for its members/managers by being willing to take the time. Example: As a servant leader, you might offer to help with tasks that are not necessarily part of your job description to support teammates. This will allow your team members to focus on more important initiatives without worrying about their work not getting done. 2. Encourage teamwork Servant leaders know that teams are stronger when they make a combined effort. They will encourage collaboration by giving each team member a space to thrive, a place to shine, and a group they can rely on. Creating this sense of community will benefit both the individual and the organization. Example: You can promote teamwork by frequently scheduling team building activities. Whether it's through virtual calls or in-person events, spending time together will strengthen your team's relationships. 3. Show your team why their work matters. Team members tend to care more about their work when they understand how it impacts the larger company goals. Helping teammates understand that their work matters is an important part of being a servant leader. A servant leader can do this by recognizing smaller milestones but also by consistently reminding their team of the bigger picture they all contribute to. Example: You can share success stories or ways in which products or services positively impacted customers to motivate your team and show them that their work is visible. 4. Help your team members grow and develop. One of the 10 characteristics of servant leadership is a commitment to helping your teammates grow professionally and personally. By providing ample opportunities for their team members to take on leadership roles during group projects, participate in educational or development programs, and expand their skills, servant leaders actively contribute to the professional growth of their team. Example: As a servant leader, you can help your team grow and develop by asking them about their goals. You can then create learning and achievement opportunities to support your team in achieving these goals. 5. Care personally for your team. In addition to supporting their team members professionally, servant leaders also take a genuine personal interest in them. Knowledge of what's going on in their team's personal lives helps servant leaders lead with empathy. Teammates going through a difficult time personally will appreciate the extra support at work and will likely return with gratitude that can boost morale and benefit the team and ongoing projects. Servant leaders focus on long-term goals-personally caring about the people on their team helps them create a team with a strong work ethic work ethic. Example: Ask about your team's personal lives and share your own stories to create genuine relationships. This transparency creates a level of trust that allows team members to share when they need extra support at work. 6. Always ask for feedback. Only a leader who is open to feedback and encourages it will be able to remain selfaware (one of the 10 characteristics of a servant leader). Receiving feedback from their team and others in the organization allows servant leaders to continuously improve their leadership skills. Teammates who feel empowered to give honest feedback are also more likely to talk about problems or obstacles they face with projects, which can help create an innovative and flexible work environment. Example: You can end a meeting or email with a few simple questions to gather honest feedback: "Do you have any feedback for me? Is there anything I can improve? What worked well for you? CHAPTER III CLOSURE A. Suggestions The following suggestions are given for servant leadership activities: 1) For leaders, efforts to improve subordinate performance can be done by first paying attention to the servant leadership model built through professionalism and a culture of empowerment in carrying out duties and responsibilities. 2) Servant leaders must have the responsibility to serve the interests of followers / subordinates so that they become more prosperous, otherwise the followers have full commitment in working to achieve organizational goals and the success of the leader. 3) Servant leaders must have a tendency to prioritize the interests and aspirations of those they lead over themselves.
