ORGANIC COMPOUNDS VOCABULARY Organic Compounds: A compound composed of carbon and hydrogen (and possibly nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur). Hydrocarbons: An organic compound that contains only carbon and hydrogen. Alkanes: A hydrocarbon containing only single bonds. Alkenes: A hydrocarbon containing one or more carbon-carbon double bond. Alkynes: A hydrocarbon containing one or more carbon-carbon triple bond. Functional Group: A characteristic atom or molecule that imparts certain chemical properties to an organic compound. Alcohols: Members of the family of organic compounds that contain a hydroxyl functional group (-OH). Family (Group): Organic compounds with the same functional group. QUARTER 3.5 IONIC COMPOUNDS: FORMULAS & NAMES VOCABULARY Common Names: A nickname of sorts for a compound. Systematic Names: An official name for a compound that can be determined by its chemical structure. Binary Compounds: A compound that contains only two different elements. Oxyanions: A polyatomic anion containing oxygen and another element. Hydrates: An ionic compound that contains a specific number of water molecules associated with each formula unit. NOTES Ionic Compound Formulas Always contain positive and negative ions. Overall charge is zero. Cations = Anions Reflects the smallest whole-number ratio of ions. Naming Ionic Compounds Systematic Names Name of cation + base name of anion + -ide (metal) (nonmetal) ↑ (charge of cation in Roman numerals)
