Chapter Six Intermolecular Forces Forces of attraction between molecules. Forces allow molecules to stay near one another. With that, they can form liquids & solids. Physical States of Matter Matter is held together by attractive forces between particles. Solid: Particles are held close together & in fixed positions. Liquid: Particles aren't as close together, & not in fixed positions. Gas: Particles are far apart. Properties of Liquids Attractive forces between particles are a little less than solids. Not as close together. Shape can be changed → pour it from one container to another. Properties of Gases Variable shape & volume - depend on the container. Can shape uniformly - molecules move further apart or closer together. Size of individual molecule does not change. Gas Pressure Molecules that are continuously moving - bounce off one another. It is the result of gas molecules colliding - more collisions. ↑ Temp. ↑ gas pressure: excited molecules - more collisions ↓ Temp. ↓ gas pressure: slow molecules - less collisions Atmospheric Pressure Atm pressure: exerted by molecules in the air. Barometer: instrument used to measure atm. pressure. 1 atm = 760 mmHg = 760 torr Example: If a tank containing propane is at 385 torr, what is the pressure in atm? 385 torr * 1 atm / 760 torr = 0.50658 atm ≈ 0.51 atm The 0 is significant.
