MEDICAL ASSISTANT NOTES    POSITIONAL TERMINOLOGY o Lateral: The term lateral means concerning or affecting the side of the body. o Medial: The term medial means concerning or affecting the middle of the body. o Supine: Supine is the act of lying on your back. o Prone: Prone is the act of lying on your stomach. o Anterior: Anterior, also known as ventral, is the front of the body. o Posterior: Posterior, also known as dorsal, is the back of the body. PROCEDURE TERMINOLOGY o Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is a procedure that treats cancer through the use of chemical substances. o Biopsy: Biopsy is a medical procedure that removes a piece of skin or tissue and examines it for disease. o Ultrasound: Ultrasounds create images of organs and bodily structures using sound waves. o CAT scan: A CAT scan is a procedure that takes images of bodily structures through a combination of X-rays and computer software INSURANCE/CODING & BILLING TERMINOLOGY o Health savings account: A health savings account is an account often created by a patients' employer to help them set aside money for medical expenses. o Coverage: Coverage is the expenses covered under a medical insurance plan. o Co-payment: A co-payment is the amount of money a patient owes after their medical plan has paid its share of the fees. o Out-of-pocket costs: Out-of-pocket costs are the amount of money a patient needs to pay above the annual maximum. o Deductible: A deductible is the amount of money a patient needs to pay before the insurance company provides major benefits.  2 o Formulary: a list of prescription drugs covered by a prescription drugs plan o HIPPA: A federal law that includes Administrative Simplification Provisions that require all health plans to use a standard format for electronic exchange, privacy, and security of health information o COBRA: COBRA is a federal program that allows individuals to keep their medical insurance temporarily after separation from employment. o CPT (Current Procedure Terminology): a medical code set used to report medical, surgical, and diagnostic procedures to physicians and health insurance companies o HCPS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System): coding for healthcare services such as ambulance, durable medical equipment, prosthetics, and other supplies used outside of a physician’s ofÏce o ICD-10-CM (International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification): a system used by healthcare providers to classify and code all diagnoses, symptoms, and procedures in conjunction with hospital care HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS TERMINOLOGY o Accountable Care Organizations (ACO): Accountable Care Organizations are groups of medical professionals and healthcare facilities that give their care voluntarily to medicare patients. o Point of Service (POS): Point-of-Service plans allow patients to see a primary care physician inside their insurance network, while still being able to use health care services outside the network. o Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO): Health Maintenance Organizations are services that allow patients to see specialists only through a referral from their primary care physician. o Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO): Preferred Provider Organizations allow patients to see a primary care physician, but also give them the freedom to see specialists without a referral. o Medicaid: Medicaid is a health insurance program established by the government to help low-income individuals afford health insurance. o Medicare: Medicare is a federal health insurance program that assists individuals 65 years of age and older with medical expenses.
