Expected Pharmacological Action
Inhibitors acetycholinesterase thus improving
function by making more acetylcholine
available
Therapeutic Use
May temporarily lessen some of the dementia
associated with Alzheimer's disease
Enhanced cognition
Does not cure the disease
Complications
CNS: Headache, abnormal dreams, depression, dizziness, syncope,
fatigue, drowsiness
GI: Diarrhea, nausea, anorexia, vomiting, weight gain
Metabolic: hot flashes, weight loss
CV: atrial fibrillation, hypertension, hypotension, vasodilation

PO
Contraindications/Precautions
Hypersensitivity to donepezil or piperidine derivatives
P/C: Underlying cardiac disease, history ulcer disease,
history seizures, history of asthma
Interactions
Exaggerates muscle relaxation from succinylcholine
Interferes with the action of anticholinergics
Ups cholinergic effects of bethanechol
May up risk of GI bleeding from NSAIDs
Nursing Interventions
Monitor heart rate periodically.
May cause bradycardia
Assess cognitive function
(memory, attention, reasoning,
language, ability to perform
simple tasks) periodically
Client Education
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness
Improvement in cognitive function (memory, attention,
reasoning, language, ability to perform simple tasks) in
patients with Alzheimer's disease
May take weeks before
improvement
May cause dizziness
Notify healthcare provider if
nausea, vomiting, diarrhea,
before treatment, or surgery
