Components of Petroleum Petroleum is a complex mixture, the largest component of which is hydrocarbons. The components of petroleum as follows. A. Alkane group The most unbranched alkane group is n–octane, medium. The most branched alkanes are isooctane (2,2,4–trimethylpentane). B. Cycloalkane group The cycloalkane groups found in petroleum are cyclopentane and cyclohexane. C. Group of Aromatic Hydrocarbons The group of aromatic hydrocarbons found in petroleum is benzene. D. Other Compounds Other micro compounds, such as sulfur compounds range from 0.01 – 7%, nitrogen compounds range from 0.01 – 0.9%, oxygen compounds range from 0.06 – 0.4%, and contain small amounts of metal-containing organometallic compounds. vanadium and nickel. Meanwhile, other energy sources, namely natural gas, have low-grade alkane components, namely methane, ethane, propane and butane. As the biggest component is methane. Natural gas, apart from containing alkanes, also contains various other gases, namely carbon dioxide (CO2 ) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S ), although several other natural gas wells also contain helium. In this natural gas, methane is used as a fuel, a source of hydrogen, and for the manufacture of methanol. The existing ethane is separated for industrial use, while propane and butane are also separated, and then liquefied for a fuel known as LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) which is commonly used to fuel household gas stoves.
