What is the Earth’s current population (as of the printing of the book)? 8 billion people 2. Most of the world’s population growth is occurring in _developing_ countries. 3. Describe population growth in a. 2nd-half of 20th Century: increased at a faster rate ever before in history b. 21st Century: slowed but is still high by historical standards 4. Define overpopulation: the number of people who exceeds the capacity of the environment to support life at a decent standard of living 5. Is the world currently overpopulated? Explain. Yes 6. Define census: a count of regions population the single most important data source for population geography 7. What are two reasons a census can be controversial? (Explain.) Nonparticipation: people who are homeless ethnic minorities, and citizens of other countries who do not have proper immigration documents may be less likely to complete the census form. Sampling: Statistical sampling techniques can be utilized to get a more accurate count as well as to identify detailed characteristics of people, housing, and businesses. 8. Referring to Figure 2-2, the population concentration of the orange area (Africa) and the pink area (part of India, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka) is _equal_.
