Separation Lab REPORT INTRODUCTION Chemical properties are substances that can observed in a chemical reaction and Physical properties are substances that can be observed without changing identity of the substances.In this experiment were attempting to separation of mixture of solids such as :salt,sand,and steel wool.These three solids have chemical and physical properties.Salt can be dissolve in water ,sand can be insoluble in water,and steel wool can abrasive and has a low density.To separate the steel wool we will be using a magnetic,then to separate the sand we will be using a filter and finally to remove the water we will be using the evaporation procedure.If we were to have sand water solution, that is solid sand in water. To isolate the sand, it is best to separate this mixture by a vaccum filtration. For you to compute the mass percent of each component in the solution your gonna need to use the equation of M(salt) divided M(total) x 100 and to then to find the percent recovery you will need to use M(final) divided M(initial)x100 . HYPOTHESIS If we use these techniques as mention above,we should be able to have these three solids separated and have a good percent recovery from each an one of them.A mention before we do that by using a magnetic to remove the steel,then vaccum filtration to remove the salt from the sand ,finally we evaporate the water to remove the salt from the water. PROCEDURE Mixture Preparation 1.Obtain 0.5-1.0 g each of salt, sand, and steel wool and mix in a beaker Magnetic Separation 2.Cover the magnet with plastic wrap 3.Stir the mixture with the magnet to remove the steel wool 4.Carefully unwrap the plastic wrap into a pre-weighed watch glass or beaker Filtration Separation 5.Add just enough water to the mixture to dissolve the salt (not too much, not too little) 6.Filter the sand from water using vacuum filtration with Buchner funnel 7.Move the filter paper with the sand to a watch glass to dry 8.Break up the sand with a spatula and let sit Evaporation Separation 9.Heat salt water on a hot plate until the water evaporates Mass Measurement 10. Record the mass of the recovered salt, sand, and steel wool Safety Sand:May cause cancer by inhalation. Causes damage to lungs, kidneys and autoimmune system through prolonged or Repeated exposure by inhalation. Causes eye irritation. Do not breathe dusts or mists. Do not eat, drink or smoke while manually handling this product. Dispose of product in accordance with local, regional, national or international 1 regulations. Steel wool:Particulate may cause eye and respiratory tract irritation. May cause mechanical skin irritation. Salt:Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Flush with water, including under upper & lower lids, for at least 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Get medical attention/advice if pain and irritation persists. Skin:Wash thoroughly with water. Obtain medical advice/attention if irritation persists. Ingestion:A large bodily load may cause vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, tingling in hands and feet, weak pulse, and circulatory disturbances. Administer water to the patient. Ingesting will usually cause purging of the stomach by vomiting. Get medical attention. Inhalation:If individual is experiencing respiratory discomfort or irritation remove to fresh air. If discomfort or irritationpersists, get medical attention/advice. DATA Salt sand Steel wool Glassware Mass (g) 63.22g 49.00g 48.48g Glassware + Substance Mass (g) 63.61g 49.48g 49.6g Substance Mass(g) 0.39g 0.48g 1.12g RESULTS/Observation 1.Some of the salt was still stuck with the steel wool when removed 2.Not all the steel wool was removed from the mixture ,there was still some left over. 3.Salt left over in the beaker and filter. Percent Recovery: 2 Salt:41.05% Sand:48.97% Steel wool:112% As we can view the percent recovery arent to good.This can be cause because maybe there was some salt stuck in the steel wool that was removed.Also maybe the salt wasnt completely dry or separated as it should have been.All this can be prevented by making sure we don’t remove as much salt when separating the salt from the steel wool. CONCLUSION This experiment couldve have better percent recovery if the solids weren’t contaminated by each other when removing them.Some of them seemed to be pretty low and high cause of that resond.Next time we can be morecareful with removing each solids from eachother and maybe will get a better percent recovery. 3
