Chapter 1 - Therapeutic Communication Therapeutic communication -The interaction taking place between the provider and the client that is important to enhance both the physical and emotional needs of the client. Professional skills in the healthcare setting are :        Communication - Clear, concise and reflects positive facility image Presentation - Dressed and groomed appropriately, demeanor and behavior is respectful, and expresses kindness, care and respect Empathy - The Ability to identify clients' feeling and is able to relate and/or feel what the client is feeling Attitude - Having a positive outlook and being supportive Competency - Knowledgeable, skilled and competent in profession and performing tasks, dependable, shows initiative, and the desire to continue to learn Integrity - Honest, the following and practice of moral and ethic principles as well as being accountable Attention to detail - Completion of correct documentation, follows all protocols of facility and completes all tasks Steps of Professional interaction : 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. The communication cycle and channels of communication      Sender - The person who creates and encodes the message The message - The content which is communicated The transmission and mode of communication - How the message is sent The receiver - The recipient of the senders' message Feedback - When the receiver and recipient verify both of their perceptions of the message 5 Cs of communication : 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Complete - All necessary information is given Clear - Presented in terms that is understandable to both parties Concise - Doesn't include unnecessary details Cohesive - Logical and in order Courteous - Considerate Nonverbal Communication - Information shared that is not communicated with spoken words. Types of Nonverbal Communication :       Facial Expression Touch Personal Space Position Posture Gestures/mannerisms Life factors that influence communication :       Genetics - Height, body structure, skin color, gender and personality Cultural Economic Life Experiences Spiritual and moral values Role Models - (ie national leaders, parents, teachers, spiritual guides, and public figures) Self Assessment / Types of self :       Ideal Self - The person who we think we should be and the person we want to become.
