Reflection Course #3 - Lecture Note

Vanessa Frederic 06/05/23 FSHD 315 Reflection Course Undoubtedly, this class helped me decide what I want to do with my life in terms of assisting individuals who are disabled or even simply financially underprivileged. This lesson taught me a lot more about poverty and the terrible circumstances some youngsters face. For instance, it truly made me appreciate how lucky I am to have the things I do when I did the EcoMap for the movie our class saw. I have a lot of pity for the kids in Camden, New Jersey after watching the youngsters in the video I had to view for this course. I was horrified by the horrible living conditions these children had to face when Billy's mother abandoned him and he was left to work long hours to maintain his family. This made me realize how many children, especially those whose families are trying to make ends meet and who can't even afford to live in respectable houses, deserve to have their voices heard. I also wanted to draw attention to the disturbing struggles that families faced just to survive. These people belong to my neighborhood, therefore working with the homeless at my church tore me up. Why is that? This course taught me a lot about working with people who get special education services, such as students who struggle with learning and require customized instruction. Since I received special services as a student and learned about school services and special education settings, my ultimate goal is to work in a school where students receive special services. This is because I experienced similar circumstances when I needed accommodations and special services as a student. I want to do that for other children and peers who have learning disabilities, and I believe that this class has further encouraged me to want to work in environments where children struggle with math, reading, attention, ADHD, ADD, anxiety, depression, and other issues. Even though this class didn't teach me anything about it, I didn't volunteer with organizations that provided therapy for people with mental health concerns. After completing my Master's in social work, I want to use these ideas in my career, thus I'm interested in learning more about them. When I recall the video I saw in class, Moochy immediately comes to me as a unique character. It irritated me since her father was an alcoholic, and I found it hard to comprehend that parents could act in such a way. Moochy shouldn't have ever had the chance to enjoy the luxury of living in such a home. This made me sincerely admire my parents, especially after learning that Billy's mother abandoned him and his father to raise her six children by herself. For these families, it's a lot. I want to work in family therapy since many families struggle to maintain stability and mental health while striving to live in difficult circumstances. In addition to helping individuals, I also wish to assist families. To help families feel that their issues are recognized and understood, I want to interact with them and perhaps even discuss marriages with them. Because of this, the course has been quite beneficial.
