Child and Adolescent Psychology Topic 8 DQ 1
What are some of the risk factors associated with teenage drug abuse? Why do you think so many
adolescents abuse drugs? What are some ways this can be prevented? Drug use and abuse is harmful at
any age, but especially during teen years. Drug use stimulates parts of the brain that are still developing
during adolescence. Risk factors include difficult temperament, poor impulse control, family influences,
associating with drug users, rebellion, and more (Martorell et al., 2014). Adolescence is a time of trying
to figure out who you are and trying new things. Unfortunately, this includes trying drugs. It is not hard
for adolescents to get access to drugs like marijuana or alcohol, and I think that is part of what makes so
many adolescents try them. Ways to prevent it are educating on the lasting effects, getting them
involved in activities to keep them busy, and family members modeling good behavior. The best thing
parents can do is to monitor their children for changes, educate them on the harm, and keep an open
line of communication with their teen.
