MAKING BETTER CHOICES Chosen Problem: Censorship Summary of the Problem: The dictionary definition of censorship “the suppression or prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, etc. that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security.”. This is a very basic definition of censorship. Censorship normally happens when a person in power or in office decides what people can or can not read, learn, and/or see. This often happens when people don’t get to vote for the leaders in their country and they force themselves into power. There a lot of examples of censorship, even in the United States today. What is being done to solve the problem of censorship? Do I need a budget to solve this problem? If so, how much can I use? Decision Criteria Roughly three quarters (73%) of Americans have heard of censorship. 36% have experienced censorship. However, there are many people have experienced censorship without even knowing. Many social media sites keep botnets from interfering with what people post or what they say. Some botnets, robots on the internet, keep people from doing certain things on certain social media platforms. The internet has ways of keeping people from censoring other people from being censored. I don’t need a budget to fix this problem. I could do petitions. I could also spread information about censorship to people who haven’t heard of it, this will help people identify and stop censorship.  I could make posts on the internet (Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, etc.) to notify people of censorship and its effects on people.  Calling out different instances of censorship could also be helpful. That way people will be able to identify censorship on their own and call it out.  Notify people from door to door. Go with poster and/ or flyers that tell people about censorship. I have to be able to do this either by myself or with very few people. Internet posts could be very helpful and they could reach a lot of people. There would be more reachable people, with the more people I reach, the more people who could call out censorship. People could also repost and show more people. Going from door to door would notify people of censorship but that might not have the reach that I want. I could really only go a few miles from my house. Even if I were to get a ride, there are only so many people that I could reach. The only way people could spread more word this way would be by word of mouth. Research, analysis, and decision criteria have all lead to me believing that posting on social media will be the best way to help prevent censorship. People will be able to spread the news faster and more accurately. I also think that if I were to post links to different articles, people could do research for themselves. This will also be very inexpensive, it will not cost anything. I won’t even have to leave my house in order to notify people.
