Nature of Matter Activity Directions Introduction: Matter is everything that takes up space and has mass (on Earth mass is often thought of as “weight”). That means all things abiotic and biotic are made of matter. What is matter made of? Matter is made of atoms. There are a little over 100 different types of atoms known on Earth, called elements. Atoms join together to make molecules. In this activity, you will explore how atoms combine to make molecules. Materials: Molecular Model Kits (White = Hydrogen, Red = Oxygen, Black = Carbon) Procedure: 1. The model kit you are using is a simplified version of an atom. Pick out a single “atom” of hydrogen and draw it in the table. 2. Pick out two hydrogen “atoms” and place them next to each other but don’t let them touch. Draw them in the table. 3. Now join two new hydrogen “atoms” together using a spring. You now have a molecule. This molecule is what hydrogen gas looks like. Draw your molecule in the table. 4. Repeat part C twice. You now have two molecules of hydrogen gas. Draw these in the table. 5. Pick out an oxygen “atom.” Connect two new hydrogen “atoms” to the oxygen “atom.” Draw this molecule in your table. 6. Now pick out a carbon “atom.” Attach as many hydrogen “atoms” to the carbon as you can. Draw this molecular compound in your table.
