Gay Marriage Do you really believe that the United States of America is prepared for another Civil War? Another few years where certain states decide to secede from other states? The answer is no, but that is exactly what America is asking for. Same sex (Gay Marriage) has been the discussion for the past 5 years, and the only “objections to gay marriage are based on religious prejudice” (Source #4). Gay persons should not have to suffer because of a few crazy ideas of certain religions. Homosexuals should have the same rights as heterosexuals because the Constitution guarantees its rights to all Americans equally – not just heterosexuals. Although people are worried about the effect on heterosexual marriage and the values of marriage decreasing altogether, legal issues of marriage, what the churches’ views are, reasons behind homosexual marriage, and their own single-minded views on procreation, homosexuals should not be reprimanded by not being given their due rights, their individual worries should not effect the ability of gay people to marry. “One of the many and greatest fears that American people have about allowing gay marriage is that it will decrease the value of straight marriage”. Although people against gay marriage do have a good point that “women domesticate men” (Source #4), in the sense that married men are less likely to kill people, crash the car, take drugs, and commit suicide, they do omit the facts that married couples’ amount domestic violence, child abuse, infidelity, and abandonment is elevated (Source #4). The logic used here is almost concluding that a person with no reason to live is more likely to commit suicide than a person that has a reason to live; which is not a valid point at all, common sense. Marriage altogether is already on its way to reaching all time lows. Second, the value of marriage according to society is rapidly decreasing. The family tradition will start being assessed due to a lack of marital morale; not the legalization of gay marriage. Divorce, out-of-wedlock births, and abortions are much more acceptable than they were fifty years ago, and those elevated levels were undoubtedly not due to gay marriage (Source #5). Most people believe that sex was to serve for procreation and to promote spousal unity, but everyone knows that is not true, and people don’t want to believe that marriage’s main purpose is solely sex (Source #1). This shouldn’t be the first time that it’s been said, but not allowing gay people to get married is not going to stop them from having sex. Today sex is what marriage is all about while keeping two people faithful to each other while they are in a sexual relationship. By not allowing homosexuals to marry we aren’t encouraging them to experience intimate relationships with just one other person we have become an advocate for homosexuals to have multiple relationships and sexual partners. Next, a marriage isn’t just about a relationship anymore - it is about legal issues and challenges. “Why should access to health care be a byproduct of a legalized sexual connection, gay or straight” (Source #1), better yet a byproduct of anything at all? Having a wife or husband should not have anything to do with whether or not you should receive “health insurance, survivors’ rights, mutual custody of children, or job protection” (Source #5). People that never get married do not receive health insurance from another person, and neither should someone who is married. There is too much value and price put on marriage, most of it being negative. Marriage opens up “… whole new vistas of guilt, frustration, claustrophobia, bewilderment, declining self-esteem, unfairness and sorrow, it will offer …the opportunity to prolong this misery by tormenting each other in court” (Source #5). If homosexuals want in on this great fun that heterosexual marriage has been an example of, then they should be able to have the same rights as any other heterosexual couple has as well. Next, the church has the most prejudice against homosexuals and bears the weight of the prohibition on gay marriage. The church used to be able to “love the sinner and hate the sin” (Source #3). Now it is the difference between whether the church believes “…that homosexuality is a choice [or] … innate” that sets the standard for deciding whether or not they accept homosexuality. “..[A] weight of research suggests that sexual orientation is indeed something we are born with” (Source #3). However, the church strongly opposes homosexuality because they believe that it is a lifestyle, not something that is innate. The church shouldn’t be one of the main ideas that are stopping homosexuals from getting married because “it’s not about what God blesses, it’s about what the government permits… you still have to get a marriage license from City Hall” (Source #4). Most marriages are preformed in a church, but most homosexuals do not wish to be married in a church. They aren’t asking for the church to perform their marriage, bless it, or even recognize it. The American culture puts so much emphasis on the link between marriage and religion that they fail to see the drive-through weddings in Vegas or ceremony’s at the Court House or even personal marriages done right in people’s backyards. If one still has a problem with gay marriage, it is mainly about the largest issue of all which is baby making! Lastly, procreation is one of the most significant reasons that people that are against gay marriage. Common comments are “…[marriage] is intended both to unite couples and bring children into the world…” (Source #2), or “… we are not lower than the animal species, that sex is not for recreation – its for procreation” (Source #1). This is all good in theory if it indeed applied to everyone. Possibly if this was a law – that a couple that is married, and marriage itself has to be about bringing a child into this worldthen every married couple in the America should have to have children. Infertile, elderly, impotent, or non desiring couples should not be able to get married and should be required to divorce or not even be allowed to marry in the first place if they do fit one of those descriptions. Proposing a law like this one would be ludicrous. People would be outraged. It makes no sense to try to restrict people on what their limitations are within a marriage, including whom they marry. And didn’t we all say that America is a free country? “ [procreation] is not a view that anyone outside [of] a right-wing Catholic marriage tribunal or an ultra Orthodox rabbi’s court is likely to find persuasive” (Source #4). In Conclusion, Americans are going to realize the large mistake that they are making. If we have true faith in our justice system, it should yield fruitful in awarding gay people their right - just like it did for African American’s and Women’s rights. If we go back to the days of slavery, it might have seemed like a good idea at the time, but today people wonder what people were actually thinking. Just as the idea of having the black man be as legally free as a while man might have seemed preposterous to them, I think that we are asking for another period in time where our descendants are going to look back and say “ What were they thinking?” The issue of gay marriage “could never have become a realistic political issue… without the breakdown of traditional family values” (Source #4). People don’t want to realize the real issue – morale overall has began to decline rapidly, and realizing that homosexual marriage is due its justice makes people worry. If the people worried half as much about their own lives as they do about others, we wouldn’t be in the progressively declining society that we are in today.
