‭The Intersectionality of Identity and Health - Lecture 2 Notes‬ ‭ hat is Intersectionality:‬‭Intersectionality is a way of analysing how elements of a persons‬ W ‭identity relating to their social and politics interact to produce operation modes of‬ ‭discrimination and privilege.‬ ‭-‬ ‭It was developed by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989‬‭, and since then, it has‬ ‭ een acknowledged as a cornerstone theory in sociology, gender and‬ b ‭women’s studies, and public health.‬ ‭Race and Health:‬ ‭ uge variation is seen in the health status of human beings and race is one of the main‬ H ‭causes of such difference. Man/men of color have disparities in their healthcare experiences‬ ‭when compared with white people, and as such, their health is normally worse. For example:‬ ‭●‬ ‭Black women are more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white‬ ‭women.‬ ‭●‬ ‭Indigenous populations often face barriers to accessing healthcare services.‬ ‭ ence‬‭- These gaps are not only because of the genetic variation but because of social‬ H ‭factors that influence human lives like income, education, and health care.‬ ‭Class and Health‬ -‭ SES is another significant determinant of health inequalities SES refers to people’s relative‬ ‭economic and social standing.‬ ‭-Children and adults belonging to a low SES experience barriers in availing health care‬ ‭services, healthy food, and proper living standards.‬‭Some key points include:‬ ‭ ‬ /‭Lower SES is associated with higher rates of mental health issues.‬ ● ‭●‬ ‭/Poorer individuals often live in environments with higher pollution levels.‬ ‭●‬ ‭There is a higher prevalence of substance abuse in lower-income communities.‬ ‭Gender and Health -‬‭Key points to consider:‬ ‭‬ W ● ‭ omen are more likely to suffer from autoimmune diseases.‬ ‭●‬ ‭Men are less likely to seek medical help and are more prone to risky behaviors.‬ ‭●‬ ‭Transgender individuals face significant barriers to accessing appropriate‬ ‭healthcare.‬
