IV CHEAT SHEET 1. Large volume IV’s: on IV Pump Total volume (ml) = Hourly rate (ml/hr) Total time (hrs) Example: 1000ml = 10 hrs 2. Small volume IV’s: Total volume (ml) = Time to run in minutes Example: 100ml/hr x 60 hourly rate 200ml to infuse over 45 minutes 200 ml x 60 = 266.6 or 267 ml/hr 45 minutes ALWAYS SOLVE THE HOURLY RATE FIRST 3. Drops/Minute: Using constant drop factor. Drip Chamber Drop factor (gtt/ml) x #ml to infuse = gtts/min Time in minutes Example: 100ml/hr with a drop factor of 15 gtt/ml 100ml x 15gtt/ml = 60 minutes 24.9 = 25 gtts/min Example: 200ml over 45 minutes with a drop factor of 15 gtt/ml 200ml x 15gtt/ml = 45 minutes 66.6 gtts/mmin or 67 gtts/min REMEMBER IF YOUR DROP FACTOR IS 60gtts/ml THEN THE gtt/minute AND ml/hour WILL BE THE SAME NUMBER Example: 60 gtts/ml x 100ml = 100gtts/min 60 minute
