ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATE: Medication Ceftriaxone anti-infective CATEGORY CLASS ______________________________________________________________________ MEDICATION __________________________________________________________________________ REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER ___________ PURPOSE OF MEDICATION Expected Pharmacological Action Binds to the bacterial cell wall membrane, causing cell death. Therapeutic Use Used to treat lower respiratory tract infections. Bactericidal action against susceptible bacteria. Complications - Possible allergic reaction - GI upset - Rash - Phlebitis at IV site Contraindications/Precautions This medication is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to cephalosporins; serious hypersensitivity to penecillins. Interactions Should not be administered together with any calciumcontaining solutions. Medication Administration IM, IV-> 1-2 grams every 12-24hrs. Nursing Interventions - Before initiating therapy, obtain a history to determine previous use of and reaction to penecillins or cephalosporins. - Discontinue immediately if signs of allergic reaction are present. Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Resolution of the signs and symptoms of infection. Length of time for complete resolution depends on the organism and site of infection. Instruct patient to notify health care professional if fever and diarrhea develop, especially if diarrhea contains blood, mucous or pus. Advise patient not to treat diarrhea without consulting HCP.
