ASSIGNMENT 1
1. List the three cultures or subcultures you identify strongly with and
rank them from most to least significant in your life. This can be national,
ethnic, religious, and they can include subcultures or groups related to
your personal interests.
The 1st Culture I strongly identify is the Buddhism. The Lord Gautam Buddha died
in the start of 5th century B.C. He called his teaching "Dharma" which spread over
Asia and soon its formed in three different traditions: Theravada, Mahayana and
Vajrayana. These are called vehicles by Buddhists, which means ways to carry
pilgrims from suffering to enlightenment. As I practice Buddhism, I thoroughly
believe in Observation of moral precepts, Cultivation of the Paramitas. Four noble
truths of Buddhism are: Dukha- existence is suffering, Samudaya- suffering has a
cause, Nirodha- there is a cessation of suffering, Marga- is the way to the
renouncement of Tanha.
The 2nd Culture I strongly identify is the Durga Puja which is celebrated by Hindu
Bengali and other Eastern Indian States. Durga Puja celebrate the victory of the
Goddess Durga over the Mahishasura the demon king. I like their ritual. The way
they celebrate the victory of Goddess Durga in such an enchanting way and how
they warmly welcome Goddess in their house as a guest. It's 10 days celebration
they enjoy Durga Puja with authentic Bengali cuisine. First day is known as
Mahalaya, a day on which battle broke between goddess Durga and Mahishasura .
And on the last day it ends with "Sindoor Khela".
The 3rd Culture I strongly identify is South Korean Culture. It is deeply influence by
Buddhism but due to to South Korea being ambiguous there is no exclusive criterion
by Buddhist unlike Christian Korean population. The most popular culture in South
Korea is "Hallyu". There Unique Handicrafts, Music, K-dramas and traditional
clothing always facinates me.
2. Identify one representative object from the Humanities for each of the
cultures or subcultures you are identified with.
For 1st Culture- Tripitaka, which is holy book of Buddhist.
For 2nd Culture- Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
For 3rd Culture- Yangdrung is main symbol of Korean Buddhism. 3. In few words explain how the cultural object reflect the culture in which
it exist. Consider which aspects of culture have relevance for each object:
politics, history, religion, social receptions, Technology, media, education
and so on.
Culture- features and knowledge of a specific class of people, enclose religion,
music, cuisine, language and social habits. Our Culture defines the way of our living
habits and practice. Buddhism appealed to dalits( lower caste people) because it
focus attention on individual parts to make enlightment and salvation, which can be
achieved in this lifetime.
