‭Understanding Ataxia: Types, Examinations, and Associated Syndromes‬ ‭-‬‭Sensitive (proprioceptive) ataxia: o‬ ‭Proprioceptive ataxia is due to a disorder of deep sensitivity‬ ‭(receptors, posterior cord pathway of the spinal cord, thalamus, etc.).‬ ‭Heeling gait,‬ ‭o‬ ‭deep sensitivity disorders. Neuropathologies, combined sclerosis of the‬ ‭o‬ ‭spinal cord.‬ ‭o‬ ‭Deep Sensitivity Examination:‬ ‭o‬ ‭Arthrokinetic = sense of joint position. The patient is made to lie‬ ‭down, his eyes closed, and he is asked “Is your big toe towards‬ ‭you or towards me?” ".‬ ‭o‬ ‭Paresthesia = vibrational sensitivity tested with a tuning fork placed on‬ j‭oint reliefs, “do you feel the vibration? ".‬ ‭ ‬ ‭Romberg maneuver: subject to attention (stable), if we‬ o ‭make him close his eyes and he:‬ ‭o‬ ‭Stagger - instability during the Romberg‬ ‭o‬ ‭maneuver. Fall - Romberg sign.‬ ‭o‬ ‭Shows either damage to deep sensitivity or vestibular‬ ‭damage.‬ ‭o‬ ‭No Romberg sign in cerebellar syndrome.‬ ‭-‬‭Vestibular imbalance: o‬ ‭Lateralized deviation, vestibular syndrome.‬ ‭o‬ ‭Vascular, vestibular neuronitis, Ménière.‬ ‭o‬ ‭Peripheral vestibular syndrome:‬ ‭o‬ ‭Example: Chronic otitis which has destroyed the vestibular system.‬ ‭o‬ ‭Unbalanced gait, lateralized deviation (ipsilateral to the lesion).‬ ‭-‬‭Cerebellar incoordination: o‬ ‭Static and locomotor syndrome, kinetic syndrome.‬ ‭o‬ ‭Acute or chronic mode of installation.‬ ‭o‬ ‭Cerebellar syndrome disorders:‬ ‭o‬ ‭Drunken man's walk/sailor's walk in bad weather.‬ ‭ ‬ ‭Widening of the support polygon.‬ o ‭-‬ V ‭ ertigo: sensation of displacement of space in relation to either or of either in‬ ‭relation to space.‬
