Concerning Issue About Sex Education Is Not

SHOULD SEX EDUCATION BE REQUIRED TO BE TAUGHT IN SCHOOL? The concerning issue about sex education is not a recent one. Sex is a natural part of life as the basics of humanity and in our generation today, it has become very relevant where children have access to adult content media. While many believe that sex is a taboo whereas parents are hesitant to expose their children to it, there are others who say that sex education should be required to be taught in school. Some parents are considering it a taboo firstly because they believe that teaching sex education in school is destructive on religious belief. It is said that teaching this kind of stuff is a direct violation of some spiritual beliefs. If it is not taught in school, parents of different religions can ensure that they would educate their children in a process where it is compatible with their faith. However, teaching students about sex is definitely not an assault on spirituality. It is a public health concern. Conservative religious people can and should enjoy sex of course. According to my research, McGrath (2017) states that providing safe and correct information to all children must be a mandatory national public school policy. Thus, students should be educated on matters of sex as part of their formal education and to prepare them. Sex education is not solely a religious matter and as stated earlier, it is a public health concern. Failure to teach students would leave them to infection, sexually transmitted diseases, and the like. Moreover, many be of the opinion that Sex is not an academic subject because sex education is a moral and ethical concern and only the parents have the responsibility when and how much they should educate their child about this matter. However, we can’t deny the fact that teenagers are always going to have sex thus putting sex education on a curriculum is a means that no student gets left vulnerable by not knowing how to decide and protect themselves. According to Advocates for Youth, “Just as it is important to enhance a child’s physical, emotional and cognitive growth, so it is important to lay foundations for a child’s sexual growth”. Sexuality Education is an academic subject and a controlled curriculum would make certain that all students will receive the same information as they do with other subjects taught in school. Lastly, some people give credence that teaching sexuality education makes teenagers more promiscuous and that it could corrupt a child’s moral perspective that would make them engage to sexual activities due to curiosity. This will lead to them being more liberated and to have casual insights about taking more sexual relations. The argument saying that teaching sexual education makes teens more promiscuous is flawed. Teaching it in school is basically educating students to know to protect themselves when they start having sex and does not in any way have an impact on being promiscuous. In fact, as UNESCO defines it, Sexuality education “provides opportunities to build decision-making, communication, and risk reduction skills about many aspects of sexuality”. In conclusion, we must realize how important it is to teach sex education as to which it should be required in school. It is necessary to be taught as it is a public health matter, and placing it in school gives all students access to the same information, and that basically it just educates students to know how to protect themselves and have a positive view of being involved with sex and the safety of it. In today’s generation, where children have access to adult content media, teaching sex education should be required. At the end of the day, “Education does not hurt, but ignorant does”
