Comorbidity
● One or more additional disease
○ One primary index of disease
○ Followed by multiple side diseases
● Main condition and other disease alongside
● Used to manage primary disease clinically while also being aware of related conditions
● Adjust risk in medical care
ex) person with diabetes will also have heart disease and hypertensions
ex) patients with depression will also have anxiety or overuse of substance
Multi-Morbidity
● Coexistence of multiple disease within the same individual
○ 2-3 more chronic disease within
○ One diseases is not major than the other
○ One facilitates more holistic and patience centered approach
● In medical care, focuses on patient as a whole not just focused on one disease
● Used to design treatment methods
ex) Patient have arthritis, kidney disease , and diabetes
ex) Elder individual has osteoporosis, hearing loss and cataracts These are not theory or model!
Health system
● Measuring burden of disease
○ How many people with multiple condition?
● Identifying illness patterns
○ Could Diabetes and depression happen together?
■ They do
● Create prediction model
○ Charlson Comorbidity index
● Used to calculate patient’s 10 year mortality rates
○ Higher CGI value = higher risk of death
○ Predict surgical plans
